Opened in March of 2001, Universal Studios Japan celebrated their 15th anniversary in 2016. To help commemorate, the company expanded its Universal Cool Japan (ユニバーサル・クールジャパン - Yunibasaru Kuru Japan) initiative. Offering "4-D", sometimes VR (virtual reality) experiences, the program focused on creating limited engagement attractions that were focused on Japanese properties. This contrasted with most other attractions in the park which often focused on American franchises, such as Harry Potter or Spider-man.
The 2017 version, which carries the 15th anniversary logo on promotions, ups the anti with the largest number of new attractions for the program to date. Joining the Osaka Castle Nishinomaru Garden event, which started in December of 2016, new attractions were created for Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Monster Hunter, Detective Conan and Godzilla.
Called Godzilla: The Real 4-D, the attraction, which runs from January 13th through June 25th of 2017, is based around the version of the King of the Monsters from Godzilla Resurgence (2016).
Story wise, it takes place in the city of Osaka where Godzilla has suddenly landed. "Riders" board a fighter plane from the aircraft carrier Kiryu (きりゅう) that is located in Osaka bay. From the carrier, the fighter planes make sweep attacks against Godzilla, referred to as the God of Destruction. The attraction features locations from Osaka that include Umeda and Yodogawa.
Godzilla: The Real 4-D places "riders" in a theater. It touts being able to simulate the "five senses", and the seats vibrate to simulate the action on screen.
In the park, exclusive Godzilla merchandise has been added as well. This includes mugs, key chains, bust figurines, an exclusive paint job variant on the 6 inch scale Bandai of the 2016 Godzilla and more. The items focus mostly on Godzilla, although Mothra and King Ghidorah do appear on key chains.

Background and Trivia
Godzilla: The Real 4-D was part of the third iteration of Universal Cool Japan.
The first iteration opened on January 23rd, 2015 and featured attractions built around Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Resident Evil and Monster Hunter.
The second version of Universal Cool Japan opened on January 15th, 2016 and featured new attractions built around the previous four properties of Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Resident Evil and Monster Hunter. It also introduced a new attraction focused on model Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.
Although the aircraft carrier in the attraction is possibly a nod to the Kiryu version of Mechagodzilla, from Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003), it is not spelled the same way. The Kiryu carrier is spelled as "きりゅう" versus the "機龍" of the Mechagodzilla from the films.
