something i think about from time to time...

For the discussion of the upcoming Godzilla film by Legendary Pictures.

something i think about from time to time...

Postby gojimantis » Sun Jan 16, 2011 6:05 pm

as much as i hope this movie is good, i wonder sometime, im sure they will set this in present times, and i am wondering, does an atomic allegory, Godzilla, who once dwarfed the buildings of tokyo, and is now barley imposing in a sky scraper skyline, well, is he relevant?
yes, there may be a threat of some sort of nuclear exchange, but when G orignally stomped his way into our hearts in the showa era, the nuclear threat, that he represents was the latest fear, he looked imposing in the skyline.
in the heisei era , he seemed to be equal to or dwarfed by man made skyscrapers, and tension over a nuclear exchange was less a threat.
so in a modern setting , does Godzilla hold relevance.
im not too sure what LP has planned for us, but one day it would be cool to set a G film in a mid 50's to 60's era period piece.
You have your fear which might become reality. And you have Godzilla, which *is* reality.

I HIGHLY doubt they're gonna' do much with his "nuclear allegory" thing. He's just gonna' be a mutation that can fire atomic rays. 'Least that's what I'm expecting and hoping.

I'm pretty sure Godzilla in this movie will have a small origin and be something like "He is a unknown sea monster theorizing across the ocean for nearly 60 years that was awakened by North Korean bio nuclear weapons over a year ago". I doubt they will give Godzilla a nuclear origin.

I'd always thought that using Godzilla to represent the danger of those missing Soviet "Suit-case Nukes" would be interesting.

Godzilla SHOULD be a radioactive monster, but he can still be used to relay new and more socially relevant themes to an audience. His origin doesn't need to change to suit the theme of the film.

An Incredible Hulk-style origin is all that's needed. Can just be done during the opening creds. Godzilla doesn't have to have some meaning like he did in G'54. That meaning has been lost since the fall of the damn Soviet Union. And I'll be damned if I want another f'n "Global Warming Is Teh Evilness!" message.

Oh I agree. The public knows he's a big nuclear mutant dinosaur/lizard/whatever (I'd put more emphasis on the dinosaur part, personally). What I'm saying is he doesn't need a nuclear scare message, he can have pretty much any message. GMK did it nicely; kept the nuclear imagery present, but light and worried itself with the main theme (and didn't try to wrap them together or something).

It's kind of... lazy. I'd like if they could work it into the actual story. This is his big reboot after all. Yeah, GINO came out 10 years, but f*ck that. This is supposed to the real Godzilla.

I can see your point. But the Hulk comparison works well here; First we got an abysmal film from Ang Lee about the origin for the Hulk that doesn't really deliver what everyone was expecting/wanted. Then Marvel does it properly, glosses over the already known origin (and incorporates consequences of the Hulk origin into the plot of the film), then delivers a great movie that gave us what we want. GINO is our Ang Lee here.

Maybe this film can open after Godzilla destroys New York? (kinda' like how the Ang Lee film ends in South America, and the Marvel one opens in South America).

This needs to totally ignore GINO. No references, no jokes. A fresh start with a new origin. I don't know why so many people are put off by that. They can just do it like the original, only modernize it a little. Or start out in the '50s and cut to the present. Not a big deal.

I agree completely.

I don't like the idea of taking what could be a huge plot and shoving it into the credits. His origin, original or revamped, should be in the new movie.

It's a technique which I associate with bad films. The origin should follow the emergence of Godzilla. If we're going to keep it to a minimum, make the origin become clear during a crisis so that there's no time to talk about it or worry about it once it's explained, but don't have it explained at the onset of the film. That's like going all the way on the first date. Where's the mystery?

The only way that can even be done is if this is a period movie. And I f'n hope it's not.
If not the credits, a short 10-minute origin before opening creds, sorta' like Jason's in the Friday the 13th movie.

Mystery? Since when is Godzilla mysterious? EVERYONE knows of Godzilla's origin. EVERYONE knows he's a giant nuclear lizard that shoots beams. There's no reason to go indepth. It's been done a thousand times with fans, movies, comics, stories, etc.

Just make the movie a damn epic action movie like it should be.

I have to agree with the idea of keeping the origin to a minimum.

One of the few things G'98 did right was to keep GINO's origins quick and easy so that the film could proceed with other, more important things (like GINO laying eggs and JP raptor ripoffs!). The first Godzilla movie did the same thing as well, the monster's hypothetical origins were given a quick explanation and the film proceeded forward, no real mention of it made afterwards. I'm personally more concerned with seeing Godzilla do damage and fighting other monsters than I am to see where he comes from. Everyone knows who Godzilla is - a giant monster who shoots rays, destroys cities, and fights other monsters. An in-depth origin isn't really needed to get that across and, IMHO, would only run the risk of overcrowding the film with an unnecessary subplot. That's time that could go towards the human characters, the enemy monster, battle scenes, or city destruction on an epic scale.

Ask a person why he comes to a film of this kind. Does he come to know the origins of Godzilla, or did he come to watch Godzilla blow shit up? My money's on the latter.

If - and I do realize this is a big IF - there's a sequel, then that's when they could delve into the mysteries of Godzilla's past.

No REAL mention, but the scene of the civilians on the train discussing the nuclear effects Godzilla could have is a rather important scene, pointing out how dangerous Godzilla's origin is. But besides that, I concur.

That's a fairly good idea. Delve into the secrets of the kaiju later on, and bring another kaiju in with similar origins, perhaps?
