Not nearly enough Ultraman shows or movies have been fansubbed and/or licensed in the States.

My personal thoughts on all the Ultra shows I've finished:

Ultraman - This is a pretty fun show, albeit dated. Akio Jissoji and Hajime Tsuburaya easily directed the best episodes of the entire series. The wide variety of monsters, the colorful characters, and the entertaining fight sequences all add up towards a solid start to this franchise. The finale is rushed and very disappointing, but seeing Akihiko Hirata run around with a laser gun is a treat. That makes up for some of it. :mrgreen:

Ultraman: Towards the Future - A surprisingly solid attempt at an Ultraman series from Australia. The show had enough guts to go with continuing story arcs even if the final battle with Gudis should have been in episodes 12 and 13, and not episodes 5 and 6. The suit design is stellar, the SPFX solid and the music score pretty kick-ass. The acting is a mixed bag, with some performances definitely outshining the rest of the cast. Cool stuff, definitely worth a look.

Ultraman: The Ultimate Hero - Fail. While I have to admit seeing Jeffrey Combs and Bill Mumy show up in Ultraman episodes tickled me pink, the rest of the show just sucks. The SPFX are lazy, the fight sequences clunky and anti-climactic, and the writing ranges from decent to flat-out boring. Some actors are trying, but others in here are very clearly bored and waiting for their paychecks. The music score is nice, especially since Toshihiko Sahashi sneaked some of these tunes (or similar sounding ones) into future scores like Full Metal Panic! and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed. But yeah, no wonder this never aired.

Ultraman Nexus - Awesome, awesome, AWESOME show. I loved the characters, I loved the story, I loved the action, I loved the SPFX, I loved the soundtrack, I loved the suit design, so on and so on. I LOVED this show. The ending's rushed, but it accomplishes more in one episode than several Heisei Kamen Riders have failed to accomplish in five. Watch it.

Ultraman Mebius - I liked this show a lot too. It just SCREAMED of fun. The numerous Ultra-references were pleasing, the fight scenes were exciting, the characters were three-dimensional, and at times it was hysterical. I had a blast watching this show, and I kinda wish the GUYS crew would reunite someday.

Ultraseven X - Now, this is a show that took some getting warmed up to. At first, the dystopic setting threw me off and I found it to be nothing more than a Matrix or 1984 wannabe. But there's some really good acting in this show, and several of the episodic stories were well written and executed. The big reveal of the hero at the end was a great treat for the fans, and its ending didn't suck like I figured it would. In other words, I simply had to be patient with this one.

Shamelessly bumping my own thread.

So, yeah, UltraLand has liveshows with old production suits. Apparently, Baltan, Ultraman's arch nemisis teamed up with Ultraman to fight Zetton doing these live stage shows.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBqhNNTFw8M
Apparently, from the gist of things, Armored Darkness gathered another army of kaiju, you can easily spot Gan-Q in the cluster of kaiju they used as a backdrop, and was fighting Ultraman, Hikari, Mebius, Seven, and Max. Zetton was used to fight Ultraman, but Baltan unexpectedly showed up to help him... I grinned, seeing as Ultraman has made good terms with Mephilas in the past.

Heck, in the liveshow, old kaiju pop up from no where.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yKyZxMq1uo
The Mummy from Ultraman makes a dramatic entrance. Apparently, the Mummy, despite only having controlled Dodongo in the past, now has more monsters under his control... These stage shows are nutts.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N71rMzqrto4&feature=related
Dodongo even appears.

Well now taking a look at both versions of the ultraman dvd release, they're virtually the same with the exception of the older one having these so called american openings.

So, screw the old! I'm getting the new cheap one that has pretty much all it's special features. There is only one downside, and that's the dvds themselves. The company that now makes them are... well cheap kind of. Instead of giving us the traditional casing inside the box, the dvds have paper covers.

Anyone seen Ultraman Returns (1983)? It was Hideaki Anno's debut work long before he did NGE, and it was pretty much a comdey. You can view it here:

Just got done watching all 39 episodes of the original Ultraman series. I really, really dug it. I wish I got into this stuff sooner. I mean really, I wish I grew up watching this show on Saturday mornings as a kid. It would have given me some freaky monster high or something.

The episodes directed by Akio Jissoji really stood out. They had a lot of style. "My Home is Earth" was my favourite episode of the entire show. Very sad and tragic. It's very true to that Honda quite everybody hates now so I won't bring it up. However, my favourite monster/aliens were Baltan, Zarab, Mephilas and Zetton. I loved those crazy space guys.

And is it just me or is Hiroko Sakurai really pretty? Anyway, I might check out Iron King and Super Robot Red Baron after this.

Mephilas had so much character it was hard not to like him.

But yes I love the original Ultraman series, its a classic.

Isn't it great? And they all stand-out pretty well too.

That one was fantastic. I'd say that one, or "5 Seconds Before the Explosion" were my favorites. Just a crazy monster brawl on an icy mountain and Ultraman skreeonk massacre's Red King.

I'm not all that big on Mephilas. he's just sorta' chunky and covered in weird patterns. I'd have to say Baltan, Red King, The Mummy, Jiras, and the Monster Chief were my favorites.

And is it just me or is Hiroko Sakurai really pretty? Anyway, I might check out Iron King and Super Robot Red Baron after this.

Red Baron is a bit cheaper, but I think it has a lot more energy and sass then Ultraman. And it's a lot more rediculous.

I wish the US got Tsuburaya's approval and brought over sub and dubbed UltraSeven all the way up to Galaxy now. Would be most welcomed by the kaiju fans.

TPC would love to approve something like that but they have their hands tied with the Chaiyo case. Additionally, no one in the U.S. is really interested in the series outside of the original series and that got screwed over by the BCI and Mill Creek releases.

Ultra Seven was released here in the states. Twice. It was shown in Hawaii in the late 70's with dubbing done by University students (Which I've heard is terrible and most of the episodes are now lost). It was later given a wider release on TNT in the late 80's and 90's with new dubbing. Unfortunately, not every episode was aired (This includes the Eleking episode, but only a few weren't aired) and scenes with Ultra Seven killing his opponents with the Eye Slugger and other violent sequences were cut. And remember, Ultraman Tiga was released by 4Kids in 2002, but only half the episodes were aired. The dubbing was pretty bad, though I've only seen snippets of it.

And the English dubbing of Cosmos... Oh man, they gave everyone a Engrish Accent that'd make Jackie Chan go 'Leally?"

Big fan of Ultraman, starting to get back into watching it.
And...I watched a subbed episode 33 of Ultraman Max today...and you know Dark Baltan? Yeah...the subs were calling him Parasutann man.
Why??? Doesn't even sound like it. Anybody got any knowledge or ideas on why they would do that?

Ha. I've never seen the Ultraman Cosmos dubs (And I don't plan too. I didn't like the movies), but I do know Tsuburaya made dubs for their other shows. Return of Ultraman, Ultraman Ace, Ultraman Taro, and Ultraman 80 have English dubs done in Malaysia but they're just so bad I don't think anyone should suffer through them. The Ultraman Zearth movies, Ultraman Tiga & Ultraman Dyna, and Ultraman Gaia: Battle in Hyperspace also have English dubs, with the latter two being available on US DVD from Image entertainment. I should also mention Ultraman Dyna is currently being aired in Southern California with English subtitles.

@Stuckey

You were probably watching those infamous Hong Kong subtitles. They mess up all the characters' names and have poor translations. They tend to call Ultraman Superman!

I watched the Ghost Reverse Gaiden with some HORRIBLE subs. It made even less sense than the unsubbed version.

Ultraman = "Superman" (And various other names for Ace, Seven, Mebius, Hikari)
Glozam = "Gro-zam"
Deathrem = "Emperor Srem"
Mephilas = "Mephras"
Mebius Killer = I'm not sure he was ever actually referred to.
Mecha-Zamu = "Mechzam"

Considering the shitty subs I found for Galaxy, I'm in total agreement.

If anyone has any links to subbed versions of Galaxy, it would be most appreciated.

To answer Stuckey's request:

1. Go to Video Google.
2. Put the following in the search engine: 奥特曼. It's Chinese for Ultraman.
3. Next to it put the year the series you want to see debuted in with the episode number right after it (single digits must have a zero in front of them).

That's how I've been seeing Cosmos and how I watched Ultra Q and the Zoffy movie.
