Toho monster logos, how to find?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

The American Godzilla icons make me laugh. They're cute, but at the very heart of it they're all a part of Toho being anal retentive regarding copyrights. I've never quite understood why it's so hard to just have one catch-all copyright statement on all American products. Oh well, I don't buy many American Godzilla products anyway so I don't really see many of these logos.

I would recommend getting the book The Official Godzilla Compendium. It has nearly everyone, except Orga, Zilla, Megaguiras, Monster X, and Kaiser Ghidorah.

^ The only monster logo on my compendium is one of Godzilla on the back cover.

I like how the Pipeworks Godzilla games open with a statement of copyright and all the monster logos, yet still find it necessary to include TM or © after each monster name every time one appears, even the monster select screen.

I find it even worse when it comes to slapping trademark and copyright symbols all over the monster's names on DVD packaging, even on each film synopsis. The Classic Media DVDs got away with not having to do this but they're plastered all over the Sony DVDs. It looks ridiculous. The only thing that's worse is when the trademark and copyright symbols actually appear on in-film titles. That's really going to too far.

I know Toho is very protective of their properties but when 90% of the text on DVD boxes is nothing but copyright information...christ....

All four have different names. Of course Toho would make sure they're all covered.

Goji wrote:Also, an icon for Kiryu also exists

Again, different name.

The irony of it all is that you only really ever see the Minilla icon anyway ;) Baby, Little G, and Junior haven't been in anything else other than their respective films, and aren't popular (anywhere) anyway. I'd be surprised to even find products that have used said icons.

Toho makes no sense when it comes to selling the Mechagodzilla character. They have TWO icons for the Heisei Mechagodzilla, which implies that Super Mechagodzilla has to be licensed separately, which is just wrong. Also, the Kiryu icon last appeared in Godzilla:Save The Earth, yet he ended up being called "Mechagodzilla 3" in the game anyway. With G:U, Kiryu was now called by his proper name, yet his icon was mysteriously missing, with Krystalak's icon apparently taking it's place. What the hell?

As for the TM symbols all over everything, it is downright annoying. I remember the recent press release for the IDW Godzilla comics read MothraTM, King GhidorahTM, and MechagodzillaTM. Is this really necessary?

Also, the original title screens for the Showa films (that Sony released) have now been altered with stupid "TM" symbols right next to the English title screen/ font.

Odd since Toho created Gaira and Sanda, and you think they would have logos.

Oh God, don't remind me.

For crissake, the title in Godzilla 2000 is off-center on the screen because they had to fit a © or a ® next to the "Godzilla" part of the title. Good God, Toho.

^ I'm glad that I'm not the only one that's bothered by this.

I have an R0 Tawainese DVD of the International version of GODZILLA VS. HEDORAH which has a "clean" title screen, without the copyright crap on it. I'm sure the other titles they released (GIGAN, MEGALON, TERROR) are like this as well. Sadly the image is cropped to somewhere between 4:3 (1.33:1) and 3:2, and probably is for all of the releases. It's just interesting to see that Toho didn't seem to care as much when releasing these films elsewhere (I'm pretty sure they were authorized releases, regardless of how shady the packaging was).

Toho hates Americans. That's gotta be it. They don't trust us, they feel like they were burned by us in the past and they feel they need to slap copyrights all over everything. I knew it was the beginning of the end when G-Fan had to start putting copyrights, dates and movie titles on every photograph they published.

None of the others have copyright info either. I kind of wish that the Taiwanese company could have released a rare international dub (THE LAST WAR, WOTG) along with the 70's Godzilla's.

Can I ask a stupid question? Why did Toho make logos in the first place and when did they start making them?

Yeah, that would have been nice. The Godzilla films are the only Toho films they released, correct?
