Recommend A Toho Film

Post by Lain Of The Wired »

The thread's name says it all, do you recommend a Toho film?
There's a great deal of non-Godzilla films from the Toho Studios, and I wanted to know if anyone recommends any certain ones, and if you do, please state why you recommend it, or if you feel that there's any films you should avoid.

And if you have any questions about a certain film, like whether or not it's any good, feel free to ask.

It's basically about a group of psychics fighting crime. I thought the characters were pretty good.

Iron Finger (AKA 100 Shot, 100 Killed) is a fun James Bond-esque comedic spy film starring Akira Takarada, Mie Hama, and Akihiko Hirata. It's very entertaining and has a few hilarious moments, I highly recommend it. I think the only way you can watch this movie is on Hulu Plus from Criterion.

That's one I was wondering about.
How good is it?

It's a damn fine movie. I think it's Ishiro Honda's third-best movie, behind the Mothra and the original Godzilla. It's very well-made and a cynical exploration of the human condition. You should definitely check it out.

I honestly find Matango to be the best of all of Honda's work.

Matango is a disturbing, yet satisfying, film. It has good atmosphere, and the acting is some of the best I've seen in a Toho film. I reccomend it, and maybe have a pizza with mushrooms while you see it.

I'd recommend The H-Man because it is a pretty damn good 50's scifi film.

^Yep, I had my Criterion-cherry popped by them, and they're two of my favorite movies ever.

It's an old one, but one i just saw. Latitude Zero. It's cheesy, but it's cheesy in a good way. Like a cross between 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, the Island of Doctor Moreau (sp), and the Wizard of Oz. I think it's from the early 60's, but it was actually done in English and a pretty good flick overall.
