Shusuke Kaneko: The Modern Day Ishiro Honda?

Postby Dash 7 » Wed Oct 13, 2010 2:18 pm

I've had a couple friends I've spoken to refer to Kaneko in the same light as Ishiro Honda. What do you guys think?

Personally I get where they're going but I don't think Kaneko will ever revolutionize Japanese film as much as Ishiro Honda did in the 50s and 60s. Sure he has a style that nearly channels Honda spiritually but I doubt his career will ever truly match up.

That's like saying that J.J Abrams is the new Steven Spielberg. It's just...ridiculous.

He's the closest thing we have to it. That's enough for me. Though I could see Kiyotaka Taguchi taking up the title easier if he does a full length film.

I would say so. I always saw him as the Japanese Peter Jackson.

He's a damn good director and that's enough for me.

He isn't quite like Honda, but he's pretty close. I agree with everyone--it's good enough for me.

That's a ridiculous claim.

Kaneko's annoying most of the time.

Honda is not.

Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;
I, that am rudely stamped, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph.

Kaneko is great, but I like Honda a bit better. Kaneko does have a better track record of movies though.

Kaneko makes decent movies but he's no Honda. Not by a long shot.

No. Shusuke Kaneko is Shusuke Kaneko and Ishiro Honda is Ishiro Honda. Both have made excellent monster/Godzilla films, but they are not the same.

That's the thing I find absurd.

What things that are NOTABLE has Kaneko done besides Gamera 1, 2, and 3 and GMK? Honda has Gojira, Rodan, The Mysterians, Gorath, the Frankenstein duology(WOTG is my favorite kaiju film of all time BTW) and especially the psychological thriller Matango.

What has Kaneko done that sticks out besides those four films? Otherwise, he's done nothing but Pinku eiga and the rather mediocre Pyrokinesis as far as I know.

Kaneko's body of work really isn't comparable to Honda's. I think Kaneko is really drawing on Honda's method and way of thinking when approaching the kaiju genre while adding dashes of his own style. However, there really will only be one Ishiro Honda. (Where's the love and desire to do do films around the life of the average Japanese? Where's the shoe-horning as the go to guy for monster movies?)

I'll keep it short and simple.

He's good.......but not that good. Still his films are pretty good and can be amazing when given more freedom to do what he wants.

He is an amazing director but Honda has that special way that he doesn't in some cases.

He's the only living director that truly can make a kaiju film entertaining, multi-layered and intelligent, that's for sure. But no, he's no Honda. For one, Kaneko was able to move on from kaiju eiga while Honda was quite literally stuck directing kaiju and tokusatsu eiga for over 20 years before breaking free and collaborating with Kurosawa. That, and I don't think there's a single kaiju eiga Kaneko hasn't enjoyed making while Honda.....yeah....

I think some people will think Kaneko is better critcly speaking. Most people would be like "Honda is okay, people like him for his monster movies when generaly speaking he sucks". I notice most people say that on most movie forums.
