Definitive Godzilla on Blu-ray List

Post by o.supreme »

Greetings All,

I figured we should have an official thread for the Godzilla films which have been officially released on Blu-ray. Of course we can later expand this to other Toho films, but I figured we would start with the basics and move on. Also since Japan and North America share the same Blu-Ray region (A) we will have to make a distinction. Additionally I am only going to post what has been confirmed. Not rumor, speculation, or indefinitely delayed releases etc...

Japan (Region A)
1. Godzilla (Toho 2008/2009) (Toho Re-Release 6/18/14)
2. Godzilla Raids Again (Toho 7/16/14)

There are a handful of Toho/Godzilla movies not on bluray, even in Japan (Like Godzilla:Tokyo S.O.S.)
There have been HD transfers done of these movies by Toho. I wonder if a company like Echo Bridge could license these for bluray release even though they haven't been released in Japan????

I've heard that the Classic Media Gojira blu-ray looks like total crap compared to even their DVD release.

Classic Media utilized the HD transfer from which their 2006 DVD was created, so their Blu-ray is basically a higher resolution version of that DVD. Same cropping, print damage, and added digital fades across both releases.

Godzilla roars in anger at how so little have been released. (And why so many have such shitty covers)

I think he's just angry about the fact that Toho insisted he wear his hideous Final Wars outfit.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

Yes, Blu-Ray apparently doesn't sell well in Japan, so Toho prematurely ended its tokusatsu Blu-Ray series.

I know media has always been more expensive in Japan, but when the Japanese Blu-Rays are almost $50, I can see why they didn't sell well. I know many North American fans often clamor for Japanese product not readily available to us . I just wonder if fans in Japan had any interest in the MB DAM Blu-ray since its the one Godzilla film released on Blu-Ray oddly enough that North America has, that Japan does not as of this time.

Destroy All Monsters is evidence North American companies CAN, since it has not been released by Toho in Japan as of yet. Megalon would have been a U.S. first also if MB had not messed everything up. Apparantly Toho does have HD masters of all the Godzilla films (although more knowledgable film critics here have points of contention with them). However it remains to be seen if the 2014 film will generate enough interest to have the older films released on Blu-Ray anywhere.

My hope is that Biollante sells well, and other companies see that and license these hd transfers for bluray release in the USA....I totally spaced on DAM :)

If a company like MB can afford the licensing fees for one of these movies, then you would think others could do the same...where do I start a petition :)

I'm just hoping that companies with plenty of time and money will license these movies at some point and give them HD transfers that actually look natural. I'd rather wait on something along those lines than have the instant gratification of owning Japanese Blu-ray ports (which I have anyway).

And it also gives us an inferior product. Like Tamura, I'd much rather see a competent remaster than watch Toho's so-called "HD" transfers flood the market.

I always get into this argument with Jimi Hendrix fans...they keep putting out posthumous releases of his music in varying degrees of completion....but I still buy them..why? I am a fan! If there was a release of Jimi Hendrix just tuning his guitar, I'd buy it because it's still better guitar than anything out there nowadays

Same can be said with my feelings about Godzilla movies...if I could have a passable hd release of Godzilla vs Gigan, I'd be more than thrilled..why? Because I am a fan!

I'm a fan too, obviously, and I'll buy whatever comes out for that very reason, but that doesn't keep me from wanting something better than Toho's transfers.
