Did anybody else ever think Mothra was sort of creepy?

Post by pikmintaro »

I did when I was younger, I know they tried to make Mothra seem more sympathetic and like a big nice Kaiju, but when I was a kid those Larva really REALLY creeped me out, I don't know what it was about them, maybe it was the way they moved, or their beady little glowing eyes, or the way they clamped on to the end of Godzilla's tail, but more than any other Kaiju I think the Mothra larva really disturbed me, some of the music that went with them didn't really help either that stuff is pretty creepy also (Not the Shojibin songs)
All of that together made me root for Godzilla to beat the crap out of them every time, same thing with the Heisei version also.

Adult Mothra wasn't as creepy, but when she fought Godzilla in the 1964 movie the way they sped up the footage (I think that's what they did.) also looked disturbing to me, and the way Mothra grabbed Godzilla's tail and pulled him back hard was creepy too it's hard for me to explain why it freaked me out, but Mothra and her Larva gave me plenty of nightmares when I was a kid.

Also the Showa Mothra looked kind of shaggy or something, I like the effect nowadays though.
Heisei Mothra looks pretty weird to me, I can't really explain it but something about her just seems off.
Although in the Millenium series, and the rebirth of Mothra series they got her right for me, she was just big and fluffy enough to finally make me think she was cute finally :D (I think it's a male in the Rebirth series though I haven't seen them in quite awhile.)

Nope! Always found Larva form cute and Imago form a beautiful sight to behold.

The GMK one is kinda creepy. Mothra's normally, well, beautiful I guess, but GMK Mothra is just hideous.

The larvae from MvsG were admittedly kinda gross-looking. When they first hatched, especially. There wasn't much effort made to make them cute or endearing, they just... looked like big worms.

There's definitely something particularly unheimlich about the larval form, and the same term really applies to the variable frame rate effects mention from Mothra vs. Godzilla.
Tokyo, a smoldering memorial to the unknown, an unknown which at this very moment still prevails and could at any time lash out with its terrible destruction anywhere else in the world.

I thought it was kind of creepy as a kid how the adult Mothra was just hanging out in the woods at the beginning of MvsG.

Of all bugs on Earth, I am absolutely terrified of large moths. They begin as gluttonous worms, they're fuzzy all over, they flutter around like aimless maniacs, and they're silent the entire time, so you can't tell when they might sneak up on you!

Thankfully for myself, Mothra is nothing like that. I think both larval and adult forms look pretty cool, maybe even beautiful in a few cases.

I agree with Mr. X and Tamura: Mothra's introduction in both GMK and MvsG was spooky. Otherwise she's never bothered me.

However, the '64 larvae do look rather ugly.

Well it's mostly just the way she moves when they are making the framerate weird, and the Heisei Mothra looks "Artificial" I guess she kind of looks like a plush toy to me.

The Heisei one doesn't look creepy, just cheesy.

I didn't find any kaiju creepy, save for Viras. But he isn't a Toho kaiju.

Mothra and the larva were pretty creepy in the Showa era

Ifukube's score really helped that. Da DA Da da daaaaaa

Mothra looked like a fluffy flying carpet in the Heisei era

In GMK, the design was legit creepy

In SOS and FW, it's a good update of the Showa design, but not creepy.

I very much consider TFA to be half-assed. What a generic film which only fed on nostalgia, it brought nothing new to the table.

Mothra Larva '61 was a little creepy I guess, but otherwise never saw them in that way. Mothra '92 onward went out of their way to make them very approachable in fact.

The green-tinted Mothra larvae on the back cover of Columbia/RCA's MOTHRA tape were also sort of creepy-looking.

If we ever get Mothra in the Legendary films, hope it's creepy and hairy at fuck. No more cute head and beautiful as fuck wings.

What's wrong with a pretty Mothra?!

On topic: The Larva were a little gross in M vs G but was kinda cute in GTTHM and in DAM.

But adorable in the Heisei series and forward.

We need something different d:

Moths are scary as fuck in real life
