It really makes you think, that although most people found bullying an elderly woman by kids these age detestable, they didn't. Morals aren't universal, and I wonder how it must of felt like from their point of view. I'm not saying what they did was justified, but I just want to understand it more.

If I may take a guess, I'd say they were doing it because "it was the cool thing to do". Boys at that age will often do things to make themselves look better in front of their friends. I know, I have a brother about the same age who was shooting slingshots at the neighbour's tool shed and strangling gophers on the playground "because it was what his friends were doing."

Hm. Maybe a better attempt should be made at teaching children better critical thinking skills.

I would like to think there's some more to the psychology then just peer pressure though.

Cruelty is power. Kids often feel powerless to affect their lives, constantly under the control or "supervision" of someone older. When they have a chance to act out and reclaim some personal power for themselves, they can quickly get carried away. Children of this age are not fully developed mentally, and they often have a poor sense of restraint. It's the job of parents and teachers to impart the wisdom to teach them not to act on their impulses, and impart a healthy sense of respect.

However, those who refuse to accept their obligation to respect others ought to have their behavior corrected through the promise of immediate and severe punishment; And they have to know that this disciplinary action is assured. When they know that this will get them, say, a week of detention, it's not a big deal. Tell them they're getting suspended and will have to finish the grade at summer school, and I'll guarantee you this type of behavior sees an immediate reduction.

I can feel some sympathy for the woman, but I've seen a lot worse abuse hailed at teachers or bus drivers at my school at other times and I don't see any of them getting thousands of dollars. Obviously nobody deserves this kind of treatment, but this woman really hasn't gone through much that plenty of people haven't experienced in their lives, either. I don't see much to make this case particularly special.

Does anyone know why this woman didn't try to call over the Driver or anything? The buses I've been on have almost always had drivers who would be able to make threats at least if the kids misbehaved.

I don't want to come across the wrong way, but she's a bus monitor right? Isn't she supposed to discipline the kids when they act up? She just sits there and takes it. The bus drivers/whatever at the public schools I went to wouldn't put up with that shit.

Yeah the parents apologized etc. Just not publicly. If they did ANYTHING public or if their names got out, crazy losers would go after them
