Destroy All Monsters Super 8

Postby SteveRGR » Sun Jun 17, 2012 2:24 pm

So I have someone offering to sell me a Destroy All Monsters Super 8 film, and I was wondering what is the common worth of it. I just want to make sure I'm not paying too much on it.

I'd say $25 or thereabouts would be fair. I don't think I've ever seen one go for much more than that, and I've seen a couple sell for as low as $10.

Is it the entire film, or just a cut down version? Alot of these reel films are just Reader's Digest like movies.

It's just a highlight reel. It runs about 200 ft.

So $45.00 might be a little overpriced?

I look at 8mm and Super 8 films all the time on eBay. I rarely see a Godzilla anything. Original Kong as well. $45 would be the highest I'd go. But you need to make sure you have the ability to preserve it.

^ They do pop up on eBay occasionally, that's where I've seen them go for lowball prices like the $10 quoted above. At the same time, you'll find people charging $100 buy-it-now prices. They don't sell, but that doesn't mean they can't ask it.

SteveRGR, $35 would probably be my personal limit, but it you really want it, I guess $45 it isn't totally astronomical.

I think I might wait this one out. But out of curiosity, wataru, what are the proper ways to take care of and preserve the film?

Static free clothe bag, keep it in the dark, in a room 70 degrees or cooler. Most 8mm and Super 8mm dont come in cans. Cans are always good to store in (if the can isnt rusted). You can sometimes buy empty cans for cheap. Store vertically.

I have some 35mm trailers Ive had for yeeeeeeears. Still look crisp.

I'm lucky in that regard, because my house is around 100 years old, and it has a root cellar in the basement. With a dehumidifier set on automatic, the temp and lighting conditions are absolutely perfect for this stuff.

Just a heads up, the 8mm film is on the DAM Blu-ray (and possibly the DVD as well) as an extra. While it's obvious that most of the people buying them on places like ebay actually own a projector, and want to watch it how it was intended, I just wanted to bring it to your attention that there is another way of seeing it nowadays, which may mean you can't get away with selling for as much as you originally wanted.

Who knows though. That DAM release is getting to be hard to come by anyway, so it's possible there is a still a demand for the 8mm version.

A Super 8mm of any Godzilla film is history. Just having it is great. You could volunteer to let it be shown at a G-FEST. I bet fans would be more excited over a Super 8mm of DAM then another showing of Godzilla vs Space Godzilla off a DVD projector.

Any FULL FILM would be something to preserve, absolutely. What I think is being talked about here however are the short reels such as those sold in Famous Monsters of Filmland from the 1960's though the early 1980's which are usually just highlights of the film and are about 5-10 minuets in length.
There has never been a "Scientifically Accurate" Dinosaur portrayed on any Television Show, Movie, or Documentary. Only what the human imagination can conceive, and I'm ok with that.

That's what theyre talking about. They were extremely common for tons of movies. I see alot of Mighty Joe Young and Black Lagoons on eBay. But theyre still fun to collect. I think a Super 8mm full movie would be rather large. 3-4x the size of the highlights clip.

Id still rather watch a 15 minute DAM 8mm then a DVD projected Godzilla movie (not included G54, RoG and GvsB)

just got the film reel finally. Came with the box and everything and it's looking rather nice besides a small tear on the side of the box.. i have it stored as i should except for the static free bag, I hate to keep it out of it's box... Is it bad that I'm keeping it in it's box?

Youre probably ok as long as the box isnt moldy or whatever.

Track yourself down a Super 8 reel player. Theyre like $100-$200. It'll be worth it. You can then buy other reels and watch them.

Actually just raided my Grandmother's closet and found one, and a screen and everything. Just got to wait for an opportune moment to test it all out.

Wouldn't it be the same reel that is an extra on the DAM BRD?? If so it is probably already on Youtube somewhere.

I dont care. I want to see the actual reel. It's like people who want to see a newer film on reel compared to digital projection off DVDs at G-FEST.

Nostalgia, o.supreme!!!
