I was directing myself in not acknowledging the soap that came in 1966. I was talking about Prometheus as the here and the now. I thought I was clear about that.

The first place most people are going to go to look it up is going to be Google which has the Wiki as the first link and all over that page it stats Prometheus was developed as a prequel to Alien or another Alien film....

Also, if you wanted to know more about Dark Shadows, you'd Google it and get the soap opera.

For the most part, that is true, they would learn that it was a prequel, but would also learn that its not and is its own thing.

Technically it's not even it's own thing. It's based in the Alien universe using Alien mech, Alien characters (Weyland, Space Jockeys) with Alien terminology (Weyland, LV-226) and it happens before Alien.

The fact is - people think Alien when they think Prometheus. It's was casual viewers are going to think, it's what we as movie buffs think. I respect Ridley Scott, I love all his work, but if he wanted to make his own thing, he could've made a free-standing film in it's own universe. But this happened in AVP and AVP:R and failed so....

I find it to be its own things, although personally that's just me along with anyone else who thinks that.

I know that's going to happen, but its also a fact that they could have simply taken the time out of their day to simply move their fingers across their keyboard and do some digging before drowning themselves too much into the product. I'm a casual viewer and even I do this (research a film), and of course, I'm not alone on this since I'm sure others do this as well. A fact that they could have saved themselves from being disappointed.

Dude, you're totally oblivious.

Here, I'll make it big and bolded for you:

THE MOVIE IS BEING TOTED AS A PREQUEL TO ALIEN BASED UPON THE TRAILER'S ACTIONS

You should not have to, or be expected to, dive through the internet, watch dozen of YouTube videos of interviews or read blogs about a movie to learn what it's NOT ABOUT when the trailer explicitly points you in the EXACT OPPOSITE DIRECTION.

I am not saying it is, I am saying it is a SPIN-OFF or SIDE-QUEL.

But again...

THE MOVIE IS BEING TOTED AS A PREQUEL TO ALIEN BASED UPON THE TRAILER'S ACTIONS

Meh, there's no point in actually continuing, doesn't excuse oneself when there are so many sources to use to save yourself from disappointment. Of course you don't learn about a movie to learn what its not, the human brain is capable enough to piece two and two together once the information learned is absorbed. Again, you learn about a movie to learn what your investing yourself into, when being grimly hyped about a film, research is done, I've seen many people do this. Even if what's displayed before you is there, learning more about it could help you in the long run and save you from disappointment.

Seriously dude, we're going round and round, no point in actually continuing.

The trailers show Space Jockeys... that doesn't mean the movie is a straight prequel to Alien, it means that it's a movie about Space Jockeys, plain and simple. That's another thing Ridley Scott said in an interview, that none of the movies (Poor comics, always disregarded) did expand upon the idea of that misterious extraterrestrial. The trailers themselves show Space Jockeys, the movie's characters, the movie's technology, the movie's story, the quest the characters are after, it shows its own movie... its conections with Alien are subtle (The way title appears, the designs by Giger...), it was the word of mouth that strengthened the idea of it being an Alien prequel.

Some may think that because it has Space Jockeys it has to mean that it will be about the origin of the aliens, when actually the idea that the Space Jockeys created the aliens is just an assumption, made for the lack of anything better, there was nothing in the movie that suggested that (In fact, if one analyzes the evolution of the script, and considers certain concept art and certain deleted scennes and the original ending, one may conclude something different...).

And as far as I know, the trailers haven't been all over our faces about Weyland. The company featured prominently on the viral campaign, on the internet. One had to do research to find out about Weyland.

I don't think so. More like Prometheus may have a sequel that will expand from Prometheus and will have less if anything to do with Alien. Alien being it's own side story (I guess that taking the Alien sequels and other products as canon is up to you, but they aren't important for Prometheus and whatever may come from it).

Saw this at midnight last night. Besides some shoddy dialogue and script issues throughout, its an intelligent and atmospheric science fiction film. Michael Fassbender is brilliant in it.

In one of the commercials I saw for this it says
Before Alien there was Prometheus.
It also shows something which seems to be coming out of a woman's chest they even scan her chest in the commercial.I'm pretty sure this might be some sort of prequel to Alien.

I'm somewhat conflicted on this one. I enjoyed the majority of the movie. But towards the middle it gets a little awkward, and the ending is just lame. It happens way too soon. It could have gone on for a good 20 minutes more.

I understand it's not meant to a full prequel, it's more of a "preboot" like X-Men: First Class. But it's still connected to that universe, at least the original Alien. It doesn't answer a whole lot of questions. In fact it makes things much more confusing, so you walk out not feeling very satisfied. It's almost made with a sequel in mind and I can't say enough how much I hate that kind of bullshit franchise filmmaking.

I'm sure I'm not the first to say this but I don't think the Ridley Scott who made Alien and Bladerunner exists anymore.

Preboot. Good word Tyler.
I saw it today, and to be honest, I enjoyed the scifi element immensely. As far as the Alien connection is concerned, theres nods to it. This is not a movie made with Xeno's in mind. Its more about finding our creators. But the nods are there, and are not hidden. But its not like "Oh Lookey - ALIEN!"
I dug the Space Jockeys look. A lot. I like Noomi Rapace. She's purrdy. And I really liked the score. The effects were top notch, and I won't lie, I came home and put on Alien, and its definitely set in the same system, maybe just on a different planetoid, which for all intents and purposes should be explored in the more than probable sequel.

I think it was trying to bring up much more complicated ideas than it needed to. Like Scott has said the first film is essentially a very well made b-movie. It had some unanswered questions, but they were cool and not that intrusive to the rest of the story.

Who are the Space Jockeys?
How’d the Derelict get to LV-426?
Was the distress signal really a warning?
What lead to the pilot's death by chestburster?
What are the Alien eggs being used for?
What are the Aliens?

With Prometheus a majority of it feels like plotholes or things that didn't come across clearly.

What killed all the Engineers in their base? What is the black liquid?
Why do they seed planets with life?
If they put life on earth why do they want to destroy it? Were we failed experiments?
What was the black liquid used for? Is it a weapon that turned against them?
What’s with the weird mural? Do they worship the Aliens?
Why’d Fitfield turn into a crazy pissed off zombie? Would the same happen to Holloway if he weren’t burnt to death?
What was the point to the baby Engineer-Alien at the end of the film and the complicated life-cycle leading to it?

Among other things.

Also I finally realized Tom Hardy didn't play Holloway...

How could the alien that came out of the engineer at the end be the first Xenomorph since this( http://www.prometheus-movie.com/media/p ... ncap49.jpg )was there?
