No Images in Signatures

You know, I'm thinking it might be possible for Arbok to make an option to turn off sigs. I'm not sure what the limitations of this forum are, but I know at one forum I go to it's entirely possible to disable sigs. But they run on a different software(vbulletin there as opposed to phpBB here), so I guess its probably not possible here. Just some food for thought though.

Sadly, the forums do not have something like that built in for us to enable. It would have to be hard-coded.

If you mean user-wide, then yes. We can do that in a similar way that we are blocking images and flash programs now.

If you mean can we have it so users have the option to shut it off, then no. We would have to program that, and it would be a little tricky as the database would have to save that option for every user.

If we have to express who we are through the way we post, there might as well be only three personalities on TK: n00bs, older/smarter members, and the jokesters. Not saying that full-on sigs have to come back, but at least let userbars or something come in. They're small enough that they shouldn't extend posts at all, and generally can state peoples' interests/a little about themselves in a few words. Plus, they can also work as links.

You say clean, I say bland, boring, and dull.

The sigs and color and give you a better idea about the poster than just an avatar and "What they post." People can bullshit there way through a paragraph of text. Artistic expression is something else entirely.

Artistic expression can come through writing. And sigs are the artistic expressions of the sig maker, not the sig owner. Sig are used to express the sig owner's interests.

Depends on how you look at it. When you give the sig maker a blank slate and then let 'em run wild? Yeah, it's not "your" artistic expression per se. But a lot of people (especially with the death of most TK Sig shops) make their own or have a specific criteria for the artist to follow.

It's not impossible to express yourself through another person's art. It's idea-meets-ability.

Since a lot of people want them back, then I think we might get sigs back soon. As long their not animated then they should be fine.

I didn't read through the entire thread, but here's my take on this matter.

Sigs are like a nametag. They tell people who you are, and a bit more about your personality.
Personally, though, I use them to flaunt my love for computer graphic arts. Take my Gotengo sig for example.

You see, I just love Photoshop and other programs, and I love to make sigs. It's a hobby of mine. Sure, there are other forums that I can flaunt them on, but having a bigger audience makes for a happy artist.

Another thing, avatars are just way too small to express anything. In the past, I've seen most artists just cropping out a portion of their sig, slapping a name on it, and uploading it as their avatar. It's certainly what I did. Occasionally, I will make a unique avater, but doing so is painstakingly tedious. The dimensions are just far too small.

I liked having a custom signature, but I understand where the staff is coming from in choosing not to allow them again. I think in time, regardless, they will come back. But I'm not holding my breath for it to come soon, because I think signatures were more of a privilege and honestly, the sig shops were all gone anyway, so a lot of users didn't even get custom sigs.

You're assuming we will. I don't agree with the choice, but Arbok rarely ever lifts his foot up once he's put it down.

I'd like to see sigs back, just ban animated GIFs and the like if you're worried about bandwidth.

Nothing is set in stone, but currently I'm pretty content with the set up we have right now.
