Across the globe, crystals begin to grow. They come in several different flavors, and all of them are imbued with immense power. Specifically, these crystals hold the sort of power which monsters thrive on, and so their appearance drives monsters from all around the globe to the cities infested with these crystals.

Each location infested with crystals begins to experience bizarre weather, toxic gas, volcanic eruptions - it's as if the planet has gone crazy.

At this point, the story breaks into four different pieces. I'll go over them one at a time:

GLOBAL DEFENSE FORCE:

The GDF sends its robots to the various crystal-infested cities, and begins to destroy the crystals. Unfortunately, the GDF quickly discovers that smashing the crystals releases energy which monsters (and GDF robots) absorb - driving them crazy with power. The GDF changes their mission - now they need to stop monsters from absorbing the crystal energy!

Playing this story, you control one of the GDF robots. You need to protect the cities, and prevent any monsters from absorbing too much crystal energy. Of course, the easiest way to fight the super-powered monsters is to absorb some of that crystal energy yourself - but just a bit, right? You can stop any time...

General Gyozen, commander of the Gotengo, is upset that the GDF cannot be effective against the monsters, so he hatches a crazy plan to convert the Gotengo into a weapon fueled by the most unstable of the crystal formations. The energies from the crystal drive him fully insane, such that the GDF is forced to send their own forces against him.

EARTH DEFENDERS:

The peaceful earth defenders, most of whom live on Monster Island, become restless. They break free of the island, and make their way to the crystal cities. They know that the crystals are damaging to the earth's balance, so they want to destroy them and purge this corruption. Unfortunately, the easiest way to eliminate the crystals is to wade through the cities to destroy them - which angers the GDF and causes harm to both sides. The Earth Defenders are also trying to stop any monsters from gaining Power Surges through prolonged exposure to the crystals - which is a tall order.

Ultimately, the Earth Defenders and the GDF are fighting on the same side. But they realize that too late because...

ALIEN INVADERS:

Queen Vorticia of the Vortaak has been secretly living on earth as a human scientist, researching earth's monsters and looking for a weakness. She is one of the first people to realize the power of the crystals, and her influence is what exposes MOGUERA to the first of the Power Surges - making him go crazy in downtown San Francisco. Realizing that the crystal power could finally allow the Vortaak to defeat earth, she signals the mothership to return to earth, and sends her Alien monsters to secure as many power surges as possible.

She nearly succeeds, too. King Ghidorah absorbs so much energy from the crystals that he grows to nearly double size, and takes on six monsters by himself in lava-filled Seattle. Unfortunately, too many other monsters come seeing his power for themselves, and the mothership is shot out of the sky over San Francisco - crashing into the bay. Queen Vorticia was ready to fight the Earth monsters and the GDF, but she did not count on...

MALEFIC MUTATIONS:

The mutants are not a proper faction - they are lone power-crazed monsters who simply live to destroy and gain personal power. Monsters from the other three factions all have a chance to join the Mutations, by simply gaining power and destroying the city wantonly. The Mutations include some of the most powerful monsters of all - Biollante, Destoroyah, and Megaguirus. Newcomer monsters Krystalak and Obsidius are de facto members of the Mutants - both of them grew from sentient crystal masses in New York and Seattle, respectively. New York has the strongest infestation of crystals - which centered around a giant crystal egg which Krystalak hatched from.

But the king of the mutants is, naturally, Space Godzilla. Thought to be dead after StE - Space Godzilla's consciousness was actually split into thousands of crystal shards - which managed to find their way back to earth. Yes - the "power crystals" every monster has been fighting over are actually pieces of Space Godzilla - trying to get back together. If any one monster manages to absorb enough crystal energy, then Space Godzilla's consciousness is able to re-assert itself, and he becomes reborn from the crystal masses - charged with all the power of earth's monsters.

In the game, if you gather all 7 Power Surges, you get the "Tyrant!" ending, in which you must fight 9 other monsters by yourself, and try to take over the earth instead letting Space Godzilla get to it first.

keep in mind though, that if you play the game, you won't get half of that story.

sad... it sounds like a really cool story, wish we would of gotten a decent representation of it.

The game was rushed. most of the time, you just click the next level and fight, there isn't much story development at all.

Opening scene (Picture with audio and subtitles)
occasional new picture with audio
ending picture.

That is about it.

I got this game for my birthday a couple weeks ago and I love it! :) It's a really fun game problems and all.I love the story mode I have already beaten it six times.I just hate that it's not at my house. But it's a really good game and great for remaking KWC matches.

I love GU. Of course, I only have a few games (all Wii). And yeah, picking stuff up can be frustrating when it doesn't work, but get over it! I'm just glad that this game exists.

Otherwise, I would have no clue who Varan is.

And other things.

Alien Invaders and Malefic Mutations was the Alien and Mutant factions names originally early on in development. Fun fact, Malefic means "evil".

Some friendly advice, don't tell people to "get over it" when they've been really, really let down by a movie or game. It's been 12+ years and some people are still pissed about the 1998 Godzilla film. ;)

I'm just glad that this game exists.

There are other Godzilla games that are actually good that exist like Destroy All Monsters Melee. It's not like Unleashed is the only game in existence. Hell if the old Batman games vanished I doubt anyone would care cause there are other Batman games that are way better. ;)

Super-secret grab technique: hold "down" on the D-pad, and swing the Wii remote by itself (rather than remote + nun chuck). You'll grab perfectly every time.

Did anyone love GU?

Postby Godzilla Lover101 » Wed Aug 08, 2012 3:17 pm

Godzilla Unleashed was my most favorite Godzilla game in my youth out of melee and save the earth. It had the best story line, best gameplay, good graphics, best roster, and critical mass. Everything in my opinion was much better in GU compared to melee and save the earth. But I did like that you had rage moves in the other 2. And the glitches in GU didn't bother me that much. I enjoyed the out of map glitches! Well I've moved on from GU now since I played the crap out of it as a child! Your guys thoughts? :godzilla:

I like Godzilla Unleashed... but it lacks the pure mayhem I enjoyed back in the time of Save the Earth. The roster and graphics are indeed worlds above STE... but the gameplay is lacking. No rage moves, no throw options, no slamming opponents into buildings with said throws, wonky getup moves, extremely punishable taunts, annoying military... it did things right, but there are so many things that outright pale in comparison.

It was ok, better graphics, more monsters, different specials. But the Gameplay was bad compared to DAMM and STE. If the gameplay was anything
like those two then a lot of more people will gave it a chance.
