Is Godzilla 1984 A Lost Film ?

Postby Planetxman » Sat May 12, 2012 10:03 pm

Many of you have not been able to see this film in what, 20 years now ? The VHS of Godzilla 1985 was the last time this film was available. The way things have been going in regards to Godzilla/Toho DVDs, I do not see a release of this film to the US on Blu-ray or DVD anytime soon.
Do you consider it a lost film, now in 2012 ?

IMO no..... King Kong Appears in Edo is a lost film. This one is just unreleased to the current generation.

It'll get a DVD release in the U.S. Eventually. Several other countries got it and Biollante and Megalon on DVD it's just that someone's been slacking releasing them in the U.S.

I think "lost" is really pushing it. Something like the two Japanese Kong films from the 1930's are consideed lost.

The two 80's Godzilla films are relatively obscure these days, but even then, it's only in the U.S.

I just realized that I posted this in the wrong section, so I already need to apologize.

How many people out there have a legit copy of Godzilla 1984 ? I have the Japanese R2. I have not seen the Americanized version in roughly 20 years. I know by the number of hits on my Youtube video that a LOT have never seen it. I can also tell by some of the comments too.

I have two different VHS copies of Godzilla 1985, one bought of the shelf by my father years ago, and a sealed one from Half.com (just because I felt like it). They really aren't hard to find or expensive. Of course, now I transferred the video to a blank DVD, but the source was still a legit purchase.

I also have the Region 2 '84 release, which was slightly (though not much) more difficult to get.

Would I prefer a R1 DVD release of both versions? Hell yes, but it's not like the movie is truly impossible to see anywhere.

I own a 1997 Starmaker Re-Issue tape of the 1985 cut, and I've seen the Japanese cut.

Depends on what you mean by legit. I own the VHS of it, Biollante and Megalon but only the Americanized version with Burr. I've only seen clips of the original Japanese version on Youtube.

GODZILLA ('84) was my first Godzila film (specifically New World's version), so I'm actually a little obsessive when it comes to acquiring different versions of it.

In addition to the New World and Starmaker VHS releases, I have a rip of the New World VHS on a DVR, a rip of the R2 with added English subtitles, the Monsterrs HD version of GODZILLA 1985, a fan made version that utilizes the MHD airing, but matches the original theatrical version more closely, and a PAL VHS rip of RETURN OF GODZILLA.

I never bothered with the R3 release, since it never sounded that great to begin with. Gigantic English and Chinese subs on the screen at the same time? Yeah, no thanks.

The way Toho has handled both DAM and Megalon, I doubt that we will ever see Godzilla 1984 or Biollante on Blu-ray/DVD anytime soon.

Same here...have the R2, but haven't seen the 1985 for years (and the only copy I have is on a crappy VHS that I taped off TV when I was 5-6 years old. Aw, good times....my favorite monster and my favorite soft drink (Dr. Pepper) all rolled into one 8-)

^ I never got a chance to see Ethan's cut either. I was running extremely low on HDD space, and I put off downloading that, as well as a bunch of Ultraman stuff off of MegaUpload. Really wish I hadn't. :?

The fault really wasn't Toho's. It was Media Blasters for not clearing all content, or understanding the terms of their agreement with Toho. While Toho can be difficult to deal with, they are not impossible as shown since Sony, Universal, Classic media, Criterion, and even ADV Films all released Godzilla films previously without any issues. Even prior to DAM, Media Blasters had released several Toho films without incident. MB just got sloppy and greedy, two signs of a company beginning to come to the end of its life.

As for Godzilla 1985, (The Return of Godzilla), although it has had no official North American media form release in a long time, older versions are not difficult or expensive to obtain as many have stated.
