Literally.

The Deal:
At an event in Tokyo, Keiji Inafune recently showed off his upcoming PlayStation Vita title, Soul Sacrifice, being developed in collaboration with Sony’s Japan Studio and Marvelous AQL. Inafune describes Soul Sacrifice as “true fantasy”.

By "true fantasy" Inafune says he means to show the reality of sacrifice and the cost of casting magic. Soul Sacrifice transforms your organs into… weapons. In a trailer, the sorcerer players control reaches inside his mouth and pulls out his spine. This creates a grotesque Excalibur, which the sorcerer can use to rend his foes. Using this powerful spell has a price—your life.

At the start of Soul Sacrifice, players will be able to create and customize their characters. Your form can change during the game resulting in a monster-like character if you continue to use powerful spells. Soul Sacrifice has other magic that requires items instead of your limbs. The monsters in Soul Sacrifice were once humans, but after repeatedly using magic, they turned into freakish creatures. Inafune hopes that these human-like qualities will strike a chord in the player’s heart.

Inafune played Soul Sacrifice on stage and explained spells can be set to three buttons: square, triangle, and circle. By pressing one of the shoulder buttons, you can use a different set of attacks, so you can have up to six spells on one character. After you defeat a monster you can either sacrifice it or give it salvation. The kinds of things you get depends on the choice you make.

Soul Sacrifice has four player co-op via an ad-hoc mode. A video shown to attendees had four sorcerers fighting a Cerberus. The battle started out with the party casting fire and lightning spells. While three players chanted away, one player hacked at the beast using a sword. So, even though you are a sorcerer you apparently aren’t restricted to magic wands and spine swords. During the battle, the screen flashed red and players briefly saw the monster when it was a human.

This message gives players a hint on how to defeat the monster. This group of players decided on sacrifice and a wounded sorcerer set himself on fire to cast the spell Salamander. The other three players decided to sacrifice Cerberus and claim the reward. Inafune wants players to think about and discuss what to do with monster carcasses after defeating an enemy. Each player picks their own option and it’s possible to disagree with the other players. There is a system that keeps this in check, but Inafune didn’t explain how this works.

Inafune wants to release Soul Sacrifice in Japan sometime this year. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan set "winter" as the game’s release window, which could carry over to 2013. Inafune also said that he selected PlayStation Vita as the platform for Soul Sacrifice because multiplayer is a key factor. When asked about online play, he said he thinks like a global producer and online play is important for bringing a title overseas.

However, Soul Sacrifice has not been confirmed for any regions, other than Japan, Inafune said. Right now, he’s considering to add online play and voice chat. Other details like how Soul Sacrifice makes use of Vita specific hardware features will be explained at a later date. Additionally, it was also confirmed that Soul Sacrifice will have downloadable content.

Umm.....Monster Hunter? Remember that dark twin self that you thought you killed off a few years back? Yeah...Umm....It didn't die. In fact, it's alive....And pretty pissed off.

Well gentlemen, I'm not going to lie....I'm gravely interested in this game. Its pretty much the Monster Hunter conceived from the twisted womb of Demon Souls with God Eater being the possible father. (Gotta wait for the test results to come in)

The game's title is pretty clear. You want something powerful and godly to destroy your unstoppable foes? Then you have to give up something of equal value in return. You want the nightmarish and overwhelming Excalibur? You can have it, no questions asked, its all yours. All you have to do is give up your spine, and your life. Fair enough, right?

Obviously this game is aimed at teenagers and adults, it has gore, blood, and is a overall game that's dark and demands logical decision making. Don't worry, its no Dark Souls. But its probably the apprentice of it lol. This game is for PSP Vita, and there are rumors of it being ported over to the PS3 if enough interest and demand orders the command.

Well folks, any thoughts?

So basically from that whole "transform your organs into weapons" thing, I can pull out my intestines and make them into a chain flail?

I thought the same thing lol

Although it seems that, to obtain that kind of weapon and power, you might end up giving up your life in exchange along with your organs. That, and if your character survives the tradeoff, then he or she will become more monster-like. With all that in mind, I might have to go into a few battles with what I have instead of sacrificing limbs to gain more power and make a quick match which might end up with me dying anyway lol. Overall, this game has caught my eye.

Very interesting concept. Definitely would like to see some actual, and lengthy gameplay footage.

All of the monsters you slay in Soul Sacrifice were once human. The Harpy was a woman of noble birth who fell in love with a fruit vendor. Everyday she stopped by and bought a bunch of fruit hoping to attract his attention. As her love deepened so did her appetite and she grew in girth.

Image

One day, without warning the merchant moved to another town. The heartbroken woman heard the whispers of darkness and transformed. Her extra baggage became clay. Wings sprouted from her back and she flew to the next town. Rather than being overwhelmed with jealousy, her appetite took over and she swallowed the man whole. Now, the Harpy flies in the sky looking to swoop down on her next meal.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cerberus was once a man who longed to protect his hometown from savages. With a sword in hand and two dogs by his side, he held his mission in his heart. What the man couldn’t defend his home from was a disease that spread throughout the town. Corpses piled on the street and despair set in as the man sealed the gates. Barbarians raided the town one night and stabbed the man in the back with a spear.

Image

While knocking on death’s door, the man heard a voice asking if he would sacrifice for the "most important thing" to him, which was defending the town. He followed the voice and with a sorrowful shout the man was fused with his pet dogs.

It is said this town still exists in the world, but once you enter you can never leave.

If you’re aren’t OK with giving up your eyes or spinal cord in Soul Sacrifice, you can make a weapon out of vegetation. A Plant Sword can be created by sacrificing a Sword Sapling. When you strike an enemy, the Plant Sword stiffens up so you can slash away. Might not be the most effective weapon, but it beats chopping off your arm.

The Thunder Axe looks like a stronger weapon and you can make one of these by offering a Razor Thunder Stone. This axe is imbued with electricity and dishes out heavy damage.

Imagine Dying For Your Boyfriend Or Girlfriend, Soul Sacrifice Is Kind Of Like That

Soul Sacrifice’s twist on the hunting genre is you cane sacrifice your character’s life to cast powerful spells. You can set yourself on fire to immolate a monster or rip our your character’s spine to make Excalibur. When you use a forbidden art the game doesn’t switch to a cutscene and clear the enemy. You’re still in control and have to defeat the monster before time runs out.

Then, you die.

"I think Soul Sacrifice is the only game where you can ‘win a fight’ and still ‘lose’ since you die. That’s an interesting mechanic," I said to Keiji Inafune, the CEO of Comcept and creator of Soul Sacrifice.

Image

Image

"I promise you that even if you die when sacrificing yourself as a last effort it will feel good. If you lose, after making that big decision, it will be disappointing," Inafune replied. "Let’s say you have a girlfriend and you want to protect her when she’s being attacked. You would go and try to save her. Even if you get killed, if she lives you fought and died for someone you love. It’s a better than watching her die."

"In most games you play to benefit yourself," Inafune added. "In this game, you play for somebody – you can die for someone. There are different emotions players will feel when your hero dies in the battle and everyone else in your party benefited from your death."

At TGS, Soul Sacrifice creator Keiji Inafune wouldn't say that his Japanese Vita game has been delayed, but he did say that he expects it to come out later than perhaps planned.

Inafune says he wants to take time to incorporate user feedback from TGS as well as a demo into the game, and that it should be out in Japan in the spring of 2013.

No North American release date/time frame has been announced for Soul Sacrifice.

I'm thinking maybe very end of 2013 or even 2014 now for this game.
Apparently SWTOR said that I can invite 25 people for a 7 day trial of the game. PM me if interested.
