With Ultron, Kang, Red Skull, High Evolutionary, many Hulk stories, HYDRA... I mean CMON. Why go RIGHT TO Thanos and the cosmos? X-Men did it with The Phoenix and look at that turd.
Well, I don't think I'M brainwashed but I guess I wouldn't if I were, right?
The reason I say logical is because it opens up MORE avenues, characters, and stories for them to deal with across the board. Nova Corps, Kree-Skrull War, Adam Warlock, etc. All things that are very, very closely associated with the Avengers and always have been. Until they get FF back from Fox, Marvel/Disney can't use any of the usual cosmic ties (Galactus, the Surfer, hell, probably even the Watcher) to introduce these concepts that are so important to the entire universe. Plus, it's all set up in the film anyways. Once you introduce alien armies, it seems weird for them to ignore it.
I agree, I would rather see the Avengers in a more grounded, Earth-bound sequel however you'd be kidding yourself if you think it wouldn't be taking a step backwards after the events of the first film. I think the standalone films do a good job of taking care of the "smaller" threats and, well, I don't want to see a "Hulk story" in my Avengers film, but that's me.
EDIT: Plus, again, I've seen it and there are no Gauntlets shown or introduced, nor any Gems. Just because Thanos gets a cameo in the end doesn't
necessarily mean it will be an adaptation of IG. I mean, this film isn't an adaptation of any existing story; it is it's own joint.
