Dodes'kaden

I don't think there has been a board for this film yet (Forgive me if I'm wrong), so I decided to make one. I actually have not seen this film yet, but I plan on doing so sometime when I have a lot of time on my hands. (It looks long) Has anybody else seen it? How is it?

This is just my humble opinion, but it's definitely the worst film Kurosawa has ever done (more so than Dreams!). It is 30 minutes too long, and mind numbingly BORING and you'll get mad at what happens to the decent characters in the film. It was even a dud in Japan and heard it was one of the reasons why Kurosawa attempted suicide. I WANTED to like this film, but nothing happens, and it's way too slow even for a Japanese film. I love Kurosawa, but this was just a colossal misfire for him. That's just my two cents

FUN TRIVIA: The kid who played Ken Yano from Hedorah and Rokku-san from Megalon is in this movie.

..I love this film. Yeah, it's far from Kurosawa's best work, but every great director has at least a couple of "duds". It's certainly not for everyone, but personally, I know a lot of people that like it.

I love this. It probably my favorite non-period (non-samurai) Kurosawa film. I don't know what people find boring about this film. I actually find myself wanting the movie to continue once it is over. It leaves me thinking, "what happens to the characters next," which could be a bad thing, but in the case of this film, it just means that I have grew attached to the characters.

In fact, the only Kurosawa film that I tried watching, but just found too boring was The Bad Sleep Well (but then again, I only saw a little over half of his films). I just could not follow what the hell was going on in that. I tried watching it twice, but I had to turn it off both times because I just lost track of what was going on. I think the major problem for me was that I got confused about who is who.

Maybe I was a little too harsh on this one. While my thoughts on the film haven't changed, I failed to point out what I did like about the movie. Like every Kurosawa movie, the film is incredibly well shot. And I did find the "bus conductor" character amusing and thought the imagery for the homeless father's "dream house" to be visually stunning. But yeah, found the film too slow moving for my tastes.

FUN FACT: The Faro Island mom (the one who got attacked by Odako in KK vs G) plays a character in this film. She also played the mountain native girl in Half Human.

Huge Kurosawa fan.

This film is very different from Kurosawa's peak, but I still like it. Its no masterpiece, but the score raised the bar a bit for me.
