I'm pretty sure most here would disagree with that. If the dialogue sequence in Ghidorah doesn't do anything, I don't know what will.

I think those "few quirky actions" were probably done with the intent to portray more character.

Anyone who owns pets can tell you animals can have personalities, maybe not on the same level as people but the individualism is there to an extent.

This. Like, anyone who say owns 2 or 3 dogs can see it. All three of my dogs have distinctive personalities, so do these giant monsters.

Disagreeing doesn't make them right.

I have not seen anything in a movie that gives Godzilla a distinct personality. We see him doing this action and this action, but we never really see any of his narrative, ergo, we never see him giving us a personality. The personality bestowed upon Godzilla, even with these quirky actions here and there, is mostly given to him by us. We perceive Godzilla in such away and each perception can be different.

Hell, you even see this in the movies. On character sees Godzilla as a monster that needs to be killed while another sees him as an animal that is just trying to live his life. Based upon these views, the actions of Godzilla will be seen in two separate ways by the characters.

And the scant amount of dialog given to Godzilla in both Ghidorah and Gigan? That's not enough to merit some type of personality. If it is, it's an extremely flat personality and shouldn't even be considered.

I was trying to think of what separates Gigan and Gabara, since they're both jerks that run away in cowardice when they can't win, and I think I have an idea. Gigan at least is strong enough to have buddies like King Ghidorah and Megalon, he can gain that sort of respect, but Gabara can only beat up on Minilla. Isn't it tragic. The only monster he can bully will someday grow up into one of the strongest monsters, leaving no way for Gabara to prove his self-worth, forcing him wallow in his own shitty existence.

Self-pity would probably be the core of Gabara's personality.

I wondered how long it would take before a senior member would show up with a COMPLETELY dissenting opinion on this topic.

Japanese giant monsters do have personalities. There's something about the way they're designed and brought to life that gives them far more personality than your average American movie monster. I'm positive anyone who says otherwise is just doing so in order to be contrary for shits and giggles, which (for whatever reason) happens a lot around here. It's in the eyes - especially in the Showa era - which are usually larger and expressive (see Godzilla, Angilas, Gorosarus, Baragon, Minya...) and the body language of the actor inside. Not ALL Japanese giant monsters are a personality but most do in same way, shape or form. And I have no doubt that this is the reason they're loved so much.

I have a feeling Gabara would be the type to make a Deal with the Devil in order to get power and would cruise smoothly into the Moral Event Horizon (ala Impmon from Digimon Tamers, only absent of any redeeming qualities).

Edit: To resuscitate this topic...which monster(s) would the following scenario fit?

Child Monster: Help me?

Monster: No, I'm too cool and badass to be compassionate.

Child Monster: *uses the power of cuteness*

Monster: *growl* Damn you!

*helps anyway*

For some reason, I think Anguirus.
