Don't say that until you've watched the entire thing in the context of the movie.

Eh. The fight itself is good, you just don't like the movie. The context isn't that bad, it's just the execution.

Huh. I'm surprised - I JUST got around to watching the Japanese version for the first time, and while I was pleasantly surprised to find that yes, it wasn't the confused mess that the English dub was, I still don't care much for the monster fights. Most of the time when G fights Titanosaurus, it's good stuff, but it seemed like Mechagodzilla stood around doing next to nothing until that final barrage. Like the Simians (SIMIANS! NOT "SIMEONS!") just weren't feeling the whole "invasion" thing and told their two kaiju to just, you know, level the city and all, but don't knock yourselves out, we're not sure we're in love with the location...

(on an unrelated note, the saucers at the end were one of the worst spfx shots I've EVER seen in a Toho flick. Wow.)

I'm still all about Godzilla SLAMMING into ol' Monster 0 in the battle on Planet X, and the fight between the adult Mothra and G in Mothra vs. Godzilla. That might be the only monster fight that makes me lean forward in my chair even after double-digit viewings.

Would YOU say it's the best battle of the entire series? Additionally, to say it's the best battle in the entire series without even seeing the entire fight, let alone the movie itself...?

No, it isn't the best battle in the series. No one ever said it was. I'm just saying that, from what we saw, it was entertaining.

And I'm not even going into my opinions over Final Wars and its quality. That horse has been beaten to death.

Mothra (imago) Vs. Godzilla '64. I think this remains among the most believable monster battle sequences ever filmed. Mothra's attacks were clever and logical, and she just looks so alive, not at all stiff and puppet-like. Plus the camera angles and careful use of film speed lent the conflict weight and ferocious speed at precisely the right moments.

Those "long" shots of Rodan lifting Godzilla, setting up for the crotch-drop onto the high-tension tower are pretty good.

I want to kinda, sorta recant my previous statement about TOM...a bit. I've watched it a few more times, and the fight at the end is not bad at all. I could put it among my faves. I just wish Mechagodzilla hadn't been such a turd ("you were just turd out there..."). Anybody have any thoughts on that? It can't be the budget - MG could have moved faster and a little livelier without it costing anything. Titanosaurus was a beast, so why couldn't MG be? There was all the setup, it was supposed to be a big deal, completing and unleashing the new MG, and yeah, he leveled Tokyo, but he couldn't fight at all. The good guys spent all that time working on the transmitter to neutralize Titanosaurus...they could have just brought a big, wet paper bag to drop over MG - he wouldn't have been able to punch his way out.

My guess is that, for whatever reason, they could only hire two suit actors.

Plotwise, I guess it could be explained that MG wasn't fully rebuilt and only had its missiles and lasers ready to go, so they needed Titanosaurus to handle any hand to hand combat from Godzilla.

Who knows, maybe the suit was not in great shape after the first MG movie

The suit looked fine to me.
