I love that scene, and if you look carefully when Godzilla is looking over the building before blasting them you see people in the building's windows. I didn't even notice that on my first viewing.

A lot of the Japanese lines left in KOTM are permanently in my mind from watching it so much as a kid. It's an interesting effect. This is definitely among them.

I never noticed it until the Classic Media DVD came out in 2006. It's a well-done composite shot. Similarly, the featurette on Criterion's release on the optical effects shots was really an eye-opener. I had no idea so many of the Odo Island scenes were matte shots.
