What Godzilla movies do you actually like?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

The title of this thread makes it seem as if it would be a surprise to learn that people actually like these movies.

Indeed. I mean, I'd imagine that if you didnt 'actually like' the Godzilla films then you probably wouldnt be here, eh?

I like the hell out of Final Wars, myself. I couldnt give a rat's ass LESS about the negative things that many folks say about it, screw that. As a person that saw Destroy All Monsters in the theatre and has been into these films since birth, I can tell you that Toho did a GRAND homage job! Silly at times? Maybe. Cartoonish at times? Sure. But its a FUN ride for a life-long fan, for sure. 8-)

Even the meathead Don Frye was doing his thing in this, dressed in his best M. Bison/Steam Punk 'Commander' suit and all, heh.

Eh...no. I don't think it's even close to being a "solid flick". The first film is still better, IMO. I'd rather watch SPACEGODZILLA or FINAL WARS over ROM III, and that's saying a lot.

The concept of Mothra being able to travel back in time is pretty ludicrous to begin with, to be honest.

Against Vs. Mothra, Gojira, or GMK, it's pretty much nothing. But up against its other two films, pretty good. It's been a bit since I've seen it, but I think I'd give it give it a 7/10 at most, 6 at the least.

I don't know, the concept is pretty insane, but I thought it was well-done, especially Cretaceous King Ghidorah.

I think other than the pretty cool looking Ghidorah, ROM III is terrible. I think I just about gave up on the film when they had Mothra time travel, I can buy a lot of BS science in Toho's monster films, but Mothra time traveling has to be the stupidest dues ex machinas in a monster film. I think a Mothra centered trilogy could've been a good film series, but all three suffer from sup-par SPFX, plotlines so childish that they make the Showa Gameras look like Shakespeare, generic and unlikable opponents and giving pointless and weird powers and forms to Mothra Leo making him a wet dream to people who obsess over monster strength.

They're all just really bad imo.

I thought the first one was pretty good. A bit more violent than I thought it'd be, some really emotional scenes, but not great by any means.

I just watched Mothra 3 two days ago in a bundle of other flicks I didn't own. It's conceptually stupid, but at its heart I find it less obnoxious than the other two. I had fun watching it, which is more than I can say for the second one, and probably half of the first one.

I have less of an issue with Mothra going back in time itself than I did with her actual plan. She intended to kill Ghidorah before the extintion of the dinosaurs? Really? The alteration of history that would be implied by this is insane considering Ghidorah was supposedly the one to bring their extinction.

And what's up with Belvira? I would have thought Ghidorah's attack would have been in tune with her beliefs, yet she's against him? Is this the same Belvira who unleashed Desghidorah to turn the Earth into a barren wasteland? Or was she just PMSing that day?

I like the majority of the Godzilla film except for Godzilla 2000, Godzilla vs Mothra: The Battle for Earth, and Godzilla's revenge. I find Godzilla vs King Ghidorah to be overated. My top ten favorites would be

1. Godzilla vs Gigan
2. Gojira
3. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2
4. Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla
5. Destroy all Monsters
6. Godzilla vs Destroyah
7. Godzilla Final Wars (Let the flame war begin and plus its really the only one i liked in the Millennium series.)
8. Terror of Mechagodzilla
9. Invasion of the Astro Monster
10. Ghidorah the Three Headed Monster

Honrable Mentions: Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, and Godzilla vs Hedorah.

Note: It's been forever since i've watched Godzilla 1985 and Godzilla vs Biollante

I am very fond of Godzilla vs. Mothra, the 90s version. It is the best of the 90s films that I have seen, by far. It is also one of only two G films that choked me up a bit.
I have zero troubly admitting that. :g2k:

Watched Godzilla Against Mecha-G for the first time last night. It was good enough, but not a favorite by any stretch. Someone here mentioned the 'superior' design of this version of Mecha-G. I have to say, after seeing the suit design, fluidity, weaponry, and body mechanics of this guy, I agree 100%. I like this design nearly as much as the 70s version(s), and FAR better than that smooth/bloated 90s version.
The film, on the whole, bored me a bit and seemed like a re-hash of a re-hash. It had its good points, some great points, but its not one that I'll be watching in regular rotation.

Is this the 'Kiryu' Mecha-G? Kiryu = kill you?

If I recall correctly, it was Death Ghidorah that brought about the extinction of the dinosaurs. Cretaceous Ghidorah was just... there. Maybe he got repelled by an army of Prehistoric Mothra Larvas, or something.

As for Belvira... I have no idea. I think she might have changed during the events of the second film, or maybe she just got pissed over the fact that Grand Ghidorah tried to eat her as well. I dunno.

I personally don't care either way about that one, but as you've probably gathered, calling it the best of the Heisei series isn't a common opinion around here. Which other '90s movies have you seen?

Legion, you bet; really. It has a nicely woven, sweet sentiment to it. If you watch this one with a child's mind, it really has many lovely aspects. Like many great sci-fi and horror films, this one really is a moral 'fairytale'.

Jag, Well, I care as much about 'common opinion' as I care about leaves in the breeze, so...
As for which I have seen, I have seen Mecha-G, Destroyah, Ghidorah, and 1984. I need to see Biollante and a couple others.

I liked Ghidorah QUITE a bit, and Destroyah had many aspects that blew me AWAY in the theatre. I love them BOTH, but Mothra just happens to top 'em all, cant explain really "why" any more than I already have.
