Samurai Trilogy DVD Re-release/Blu-Ray release

The three page analysis by Bruce Eder is gone it seems (he did a three page analysis for the first two films).

Here are the main site's reviews for the original releases:

Goddamn it!

Here are three more movies I already own that I'll have to buy again.

If the new releases end up being major improvements, I guess it will not be all that bad (seeing how bad Tohokingdom says the old releases were). New supplements also don't hurt. Not to mention nice new box art.

I know, I just feel like bitching. It's in my nature.

The technical specs alone make it worth the upgrade, that's why I'll have to get it. As much as I love Criterion, the early generation DVDs just don't cut it in many ways anymore. At least this ought to get a Blu-Ray release too, so it'll be an upgrade in that sense as well.

The original Criterion releases were quite sub-par, so I'm confident we'll get a big improvement.

So are these movies any good? Would anyone recommend them to someone who's not into samurai movies?

I've seen them as part of a class about five years ago and thought they were great. You should pick them up.

I'd recommend them to anyone. Especially to someone who isn't "into" samurai films, since I believe that anyone ought to be able to appreciate a great picture, regardless of the genre.

Now if only they'd release onto blu-ray KWAIDAN, if they still have the rights (I would think they would).

I'm pretty sure Criterion is still printing Kwaiden discs (at least they were recently). And you're right, that film is screaming for a hi-def release. If the could give us Kuroneko on Blu-ray, this ought to be a no-brainer.

So, I watched Criterion's old Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto disc a few days back.

Yeah, I'd say this re-issue is long overdue.
