My girlfriend wants to watch a Godzilla movie - which one?

For discussions covering more than one Toho film or show that span across more than one “era.”

GFW is even less epic than the Transformers films.

I'm not sure ANY of the Godzilla films could be considered epic.

I agree. There is no Godzilla film that I would call an "epic".

If you look at the showa series as a whole maybe it could be an epic.

...No. An epic, by it's very definition, is a larger than life depiction of the past. Every Showa film depicts something that is either in the future or the present, never the past.

Look! GxG is using schoolbook definitions for words again!

...And what's wrong with that?

Also, to be fair, the definition I'm using for "epic" comes from the American Film Institutes' definition of the word.

Thanks for proving my point that you always default to narrow, canned definitions for words.

Well, Wikipedia may not always be the most reliable source of information, but here's their article on "epic film" anyway:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_film

It pretty much says the same thing GxG did.

Wat. No it doesn't. The original comment about epic wasn't even using it as a generic title.

It's not exactly the same, but very similar. Wiki describes it as "a category of films with a large scale, sweeping scope and with much spectacle, usually transporting viewers to other settings or eras".

And GxG's point was to try to point out that epics only deal with the past (which they don't). It's still a failure of reading comprehension anyway, because no one said GFW was a film of the epic genre. They were using epic in its current popular meaning.

I don't like this discussion. It feels sort of...off topic?

The first G movie I watched with Brit was "Final Wars"... yeah...

She liked it alot though. She got into the monsters really quickly.

Then when AMC did that monster movie month, she took it upon herself to watch "King of the Monsters", even though I wasn't with her. She loved it. She even asked to borrow my DVD copy so she could watch it again.

so for now she has seen...

KOTM
AMA
GMK
GxMG
SOS
FW

and some Gamera for good measure...

MST3K Gamera vs Gaos
Gamera the Brave

Her favorite Kaiju is Anguirus.
