MPAA Ratings Cards

Postby Tamura » Sun Apr 01, 2012 4:17 pm

This one appears at the beginning of DESTROY ALL MONSTERS:

And this comes before GODZILLA'S REVENGE:

Does anybody know of any more? Would the Cinema Shares releases have carried the second one posted?

I think it's definitely possible. I know they all had a G rating, as did AIP's release of GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER. I would assume if SMOG did have one, it would be the second one.

And DAM too. The hell? I know for a fact I see a guy with a bleeding bullet hole in his head when they have that shoot out on the island. And the brainwashed dude committing suicide by jumping out the window. Oh and the brutal beatdown King Ghidorah gets with a bleeding neck and burnt chest. :?

Is Gigan rated G?

The poster for GODZILLA ON MONSTER ISLAND has a G rating on it, and so do the rest of Cinema Shares' one-sheets for their other Godzilla releases. Curiously, there exists a newspaper ad for MEGALON with an R-rating. :freak:

I heard Gojira got an X and was banned in England or something for a while.

Here it is (hats off to Baradagi for originally locating this):

It's not surprising that GODZILLA was given an X certification in England, it was pretty par for the course for sci-fi and monster films to receive such ratings over there at that time.

Holy crap, the only reason I can think they did that was cause of the pin-up in the back of the truck, but why?

Standards were a bit different back then.

Yeah, back then you could get away with some blood in "kids" films. Night of the Living Dead even played during matinees during it's release.

Yup. "King Kong Escapes" also had a G-rating and it has two people getting shot to death and at least a few scenes of blood. Though, it's odd how much tamer ratings get with time. The "PG" used to be a pretty extreme rating, though that was before the PG-13 came out. As it is, Wes Craven's original "Swamp Thing" carried a PG but contained female nudity and the film, "Badlands" would easily be R-rated by today's standards. I did also notice that around the mid-90's, films like "Batman Forever" and "Double Dragon" that had very little profanity and violence that was basically comic book-style were getting PG-13's where they would have previously got a "PG". The MPAA has been known to be incosistent quite a bit.
Check out the official FB for my upcoming short film, "Destroy All Sisters".

Where did you find those copies of DAM & G's Revenge with ratings cards, Tamura?

They weren't actually from copies of DAM and GODZILLA'S REVENGE. I took them off this video and stretched them to 2.35:1, the way they would have been presented with these films:

The MPAA rating DOES appear for a brief second right at the beginning of some prints of Revenge.

Well things were different back then. Dracula Has Risen from the Grave (1968) is rated G and that movie has a pretty brutal stab scene. Even Jaws (1975) is PG and I think Jaws would be at least PG-13 if it was made today.
