Is Godzilla 1998 still an official Godzilla movie?

For discussion of Toho produced and distributed films or shows released from 1980 up to 1998 (includes Gamera 3)

Well, I need to see official documentation stating such.

The fact that new video releases of Godzilla '98, printed years after "Zilla" appeared in Final Wars, still list the monster as "Godzilla" in the Toho copyright (both character and design) means that yes, it is in writing. Toho, a company that is fanatical about their trademarks, is still copyrighting the monster in the TriStar movie as "Godzilla", and they have been right along.

The only use of the "Zilla" character remains Final Wars.

And that's because the monster seen in Final Wars isn't the monster from the Tristar film. I don't get why this is ever up for debate.

For better or worse, in this case worse, and for all intents and purposes it is officially a product of Toho licensed under the name "Godzilla".

Doesn't change the fact that Toho, a good chunk of the fans and even a good chunk of none-fans don't think very highly of the film.

Because it would make a lot of people happy to point fingers at those involved with G'98 and scream "Nyaa, nyaa...Toho says go skreeonk yourselves!"

Seriously, Legion, it just makes me shake my head. The movie sucks. It's not going to get any better even if Toho suddenly decided to change the freaking name of the monster.

Wow...ummm...I...what...?

No, seriously, what?

My issue is mainly with people stating the very WRONG fact that Toho officially renamed the 1998 version as an acknowledgement that the Tristar monster isn't Godzilla. People who do this are stating a fact that, again, is wrong. I don't really give a crap about the quality of GINO or GFW or of Godzilla '98 or GINO. What I do care about is misinformation. People see GINO and then see Zilla in GFW and then wrongly think that they're the same creature and then pull a "fact" out of their ass to justify their belief that Toho intended both monsters to be the exact same creature, only the latter one has a different name and, retroactively, so does the earlier version. Zilla is only a monster that looks like the 1998 Godzilla (who is still copywritten as Godzilla) as a slam at the Tristar film. Long story short: the 1998 Godzilla is still called Godzilla, despite the presence of another creature that looked like him called Zilla.

Said like that, it sounds like a very stupid move on Toho's part.

Nobody in their right minds is saying GINO and Zilla (Godzilla Final Wars) are the same character. This is not a matter of "officially" renaming a character, as much as it is an attempt to mock it. The Millenium series did a good job at that.
Every film should have at least one animal attack.

Hey... you do realize that I have been agreeing with you, right? And backing you up on the GINO home video copyright thing?

I also offered an opinion on why some folks are disagreeing with the facts, but that's beside the point. We are literally saying the exact same things here.

I understand that the 1998 Godzilla is called Godzilla, but It just don't feel right calling it that.

The one with Jean Reno? Eh...

Well, I'll try and be positive, this movie has taken enough attacks:

Its a decent enough Giant-CG-Jay Leno-Lizard movie, but a Godzilla picture? ...Nope. :g2k:

In 2008, Toho remastered the entire Godzilla series in HD. The 1998 American film was included, and Toho broadcast the HD version as GODZILLA.

And here's the listing for G-98 in Toho's online film library...

http://www.toho.co.jp/library/system/movies/detail/1745

So --years after FINAL WARS and Zilla-- Toho still uses the name GODZILLA for the 1998 movie and character.

Hey wait a minute, if they remastered the entire Godzilla series, why is Godzilla vs. Megalon still degraded? I've seen the Sci-Fi broadcast of the widescreen presentation of Godzilla vs. Megalon, which was far better in quality than the releases available.

Mean that, no, Toho never renamed anything.

Toho remastered all of the Japanese versions in HD for satellite TV and Blu-ray in Japan. MEGALON has been shown on HD TV in Japan but has not yet been released on Blu-ray there. In the US, there has never been a Toho-authorized DVD or Blu-ray release of MEGALON... the few DVDs that have come out were unlicensed and did not use materials directly provided by Toho so the quality was poor. Last year Media Blasters licensed the rights to MEGALON from Toho, and Toho has provided the HD version for the upcoming US DVD (scheduled for August 14).

Yes, I've heard of the Media Blasters version...but I never heard of a release date. Do you have a link stating (for a fact) that the US DVD release is 14 August 2012?
I'm sorry I'm coming off as skeptical; it's just that I've been looking forward to this movie, and I just don't want to get my hopes up because of the possibility that the plug could be pulled on this one.
