What about The Running Man (1987)? It seems like The Hunger Games has a similar to plot to it? I'm sure The Hunger Games will be better then Gamer (Another movie from a couple years ago with a similar plot), but the movie still looks dull to me.
Taking the books into consideration, the novel of the Running Man is too different to compare. The main character isn't competing in a gladiator type game, but is trying to stay on the run across the country for a certain amount of time (I want to say a month, but I haven't read it since High School). It's more like the Fugitive than anything else. I don't remember a lot of it, but it was interesting, if unspectacular.
As far as books go, Battle Royale wins.
On movies, haven't seen the Hunger Games and have very little desire to. Battle Royale made the mistake of condensing 600 pages and trying to keep pace with it. The Running Man created a new plot entirely. I like them both for different reasons, but the Running Man's cheese value always makes me grin, though as an adaptation, Battle Royale was more faithful to the source material.
