The only anime that is not enjoyable without nostalgia goggles is the 4kids dub of Pokemon. The dub was never that good, the Japanese version of Pokemon: The First Movie is much better and darker. The manga of Pokemon even better then the anime IMO.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure
Full Metal Alchemist (Both series do a great job at presenting emotion, trauma, passion and a great story)
Yu Yu Hakusho (Great example of shounen choreography. Battles are won strategically and don't require redundancy or the use of power level fillers)

I agree that the anime shows that you listed are better, but I do find DB to a enjoyable show. I watch the show and read the manga without nostalgia goggles and I enjoy it for what it is.

But it does have fast-paced action (if you get past the constant screaming and stalling of the original DBZ anime), some pretty good comedy, and loveable characters. That makes it fun enough for me.

Dragon Ball Kai would be for you, since they redid the animation, subbing and eliminated all filler arcs and episodes and all of Buu.

Actually, a lot of it's still the old animation, just re-traced or whatever.

Don't get me wrong. It looks GOOD. But it's not great.

As for whether or not DBZ is garbage... No, it is not. Yes, it's fairly repetitive. Yeah, a lot of the fight choreography is boring toward the end, but the anime... the anime is probably the major offender here. It drew stuff out ridiculously. The infamous "five minutes" could actually conceivably be five minutes in the manga. It's generally much better-paced when it's on paper.

Yeah, it's hard to objectively say the later arcs are just as good as the first several (personally, I feel the manga reaches its high point at the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai), but I still can't say they're terrible. Even when the majority of the arc is ridiculously muddled, Toriyama always managed to whip out an epic finale (Cell Games, final battle with Boo).

You might like other series better, but you can't really say that Dragon Ball is objectively trash.

Freaking Shock and Awe (Extreme) and Rumble in the Jungle (Extreme) Combat challenges on skreeonk Arkham Asylum, it's nearly skreeonk impossible to beat Shock without time running out (Especailly with all the stun guys) and then it's just to goddamn hard to get the 50000 points on Rumble.

I'm one of the few that doesn't watch it for nostalgia. Its entertainment and there are some fun things in it. Would I say its mindless? A little bit.

I don't watch DB for nostalgia neither seeing that I didn't watch the series in Japanese until I was 13. I remember I used to hate the show until 2001 when I give it a second chance and grow to like it.

I have never been a fan of DB in any incarnation. I thought it was goofy back in the day and still think so now. Granted, I still do watch some anime and enjoyed the hell out of the Yu-Gi-Oh! series when it was out, so I guess I'm not one to talk.

Dragon Ball is dated. Compared to anime now (and it's fanbase), it's shallow with a weak story. It's about dudes fighting dudes. If Dude A is stronger, Dude B buffs up, yells and beats Dude A until Dude C shows up then substitute Dude C for Dude A.

That's it! The manga is better in some respects but DB-Z-GT has been done to death here in the States. And they keep RE-RELEASING IT!

BTW Tenchi Muyo! and Ranma 1/2 are worlds better.

Rofl no, a lot of anime now revolves around weak love stories about highschool kids. It's the in thing right now, trust me I still look at the prospects every season. Maybe 1 or 2 series a season are cool, but to say anime now is stronger than it was? I'd like whatever the hell you're smoking please.

Look at the love stories of DB-Z-GT and compare it to ANY anime with a love angle.

DB-Z-GT is like a puddle, anything else is at least a retention pond (depth wise).

I personally prefer the original Dragonball. It was at least funny and cute.

Uh so are these new animus

They're mostly ecchi series, where story takes a back seat to setting up panty shots and boob jokes.

I agree that Tenchi Muyo is great, I still think the first OVA's are the best. I remember hating Tenchi in Tokyo, but I still say Devilman is my favorite manga.

Well, yeah... It started as a gag manga. And it was intended to be goofy. That's not really something you can hold against it.

Now, I completely understand if that's not your thing.

Tenchi in Tokyo is a bit more Earthy and less on the Spacey stuff. It's canon to nothing before and after it. I also love the movies. Especially the first.

And of course, I have to debunk the bullshit for them.
