Bandai Theater Exclusives & Clear Vinyls!

Postby UnCanny Studios » Tue Mar 13, 2012 10:55 am

I can remember growing up and collecting only realistic figures, mostly Bandais. Anything that was the wrong color or not screen accurate in any fashion completely avoided my interest.

I've become the complete opposite as of late. I'm a Marmit freak and love vintage figures with bright colors and unique characterizations.

Along the way, I've developed a dangerous love for Bandai Theater Exclusives (and similar clear vinyls). I've amassed a good amount of them over the past year, and was curious as to how others felt about them. I know some collectors despise them... but there has to be more fans out there like myself!

Here are some shots from my collection, let me know what you guys think of such figures!

These here are among my favorite Bandai figs of all time. I was never one to buy a lot of these "exclusives", but those two burrowed right into brain and wouldn't leave until I bought them.

^Agree completely. They look fantastic side by side. He's barely noticeable, but the Black Translucent GMK Goji is behind both of them, he's pretty great as well.

I keep an open mind on what is out there and what I collect. Some clear vinyl gimmicks work and appeal to me and some just fall very short. I don't go out of my way to collect only one or a few particular brand series, companies, characters, or gimmicks such as double cast vinyl, clear vinyl, glitter injected vinyl, and gid vinyl. Here are some examples....

:D

Some clear vinyls I have and in my opinion worked very well.....

My large size Hyper Hobby exclusive Marmit Godzilla. Clear orange vinyl with glitter and painted. Some of you may have seen this exact picture on ebay from a seller. Just a fyi that seller stole this picture from me.
Image

Standard size Marmit Godzilla. Clear red vinyl with glitter.
Image

Yamanaya Aboras. Clear blue vinyl and painted.
Image

Toygraph Space Trooper. Clear vinyl body and helmet with solid orange head and interior guts vinyl.
Image

Slash Mechagodzilla.
Image

:?

Some more clear vinyl toys I have but just plain boring or ok in my opinion....

Bandai 2003 Mechagodzilla. Ito Yokado exclusive. Clear black.
Image

Bandai Theater 1999 Godzilla
Image

Bandai Ultraman Zero Event Exclusive. Clear blue vinyl painted. The paint application is slightly better than the standard release by using the 2 different silvers. But in reality really no difference to make this stand out. Don't get me wrong. Nice figure. Just not special.
Image

lol I just notice I posted all the one's I like from different companies and Bandai on the ok to boring. That was not done on purpose. And there are a few clear Bandai that I really like before anyone thinks to start a fight.

Love this guy. It just oozes "50s B-Movie" charm.

I'm a fan of the translucent figures myself as well, although I've been focusing more on buying the vintage Bullmark and Marusan figures lately. Here are some pics of my translucent figures!

Perfect description for how my own collecting style has changed over the years. I started with realisitc BANDAI figures only. Then got a few exclusives that kind of imitated special movie scenes like Meltdown Godzilla, the "supercharged" and "frozen" FW Goji or the translucent glittering Ghidorah 2002. Then I got to love them and now I have a vast amount of all kinds of translucent and other special BANDAI figures, may it be Godzilla-, Gamera- or Ultraman-related. Literally, I have tons of 'em and am at the point of only missing a minor percentage of these type of items, which is in most cases only the super limited stuff.

Too many to photograph but I just counted and, jeez, I have about 56 translucent or semi-translucent vinyl figures. Didn't think I had that many.

in general, i'm not too big a fan of translucent figures. The 2 I do like a lot are the meltdown godzilla and the marmit MH godzilla 55.

this is probably the only wholly "clear vinyl" i made a concerted effort to purchase

That Aboras looks great. Like Kaiju no Mura, I think some work pretty well but others are kinda pointless. I actually like the 1999 theater exclusive, though--especially since it arguably depicts the body-scan that the Orga-ship-thing does of Godzilla in their first encounter.

Anyway! Great topic, Uncanny. Here's my Yamanaya Dorako.

This Marmit G2K Godzilla is absolutely beautiful

And these two Gigabrain Gigans are breathtaking.

Why would I need BC's newest wave when I've these? ;)

I only have the Bandai Theater Exclusive Godzilla 2000, the Flaming Mothra 2005 figure, and the clear white Ito Yokado Bandai Godzilla 2005.
My interest in theater exclusives and clear vinyls has been rising again lately, and I've actually been searching for good deals online. I'm primarily after the Theater Exclusive Godzilla 2003 figure with the icy white skin and blue spines. A beautiful figure if you ask me. :)

Everything looks great! Some really impressive collections around here. I can't wait to move in to my new place so I can take all of my stuff out of boxes, and spread out all the incredibly cramped stuff!

No need to photograph all of them, I only posted a few of mine! I need to post a picture of my clear Green Y-MSF Hedorah, the only Y-MSF I own, to see if you guys like it as much as I do  .

I'll never forget this one. I received this beautiful Bandai as a birthday present this year. For some reason, I expected it to be in 6" scale... not sure why. I opened the bag and could not get over how massive this Mothra is! And the contrast of the teel eyes with the fire orange body is superb.

Makes me want to collect all of the SOS Mothra 8" Bandais.

I'm thinking about collecting the Bandai translucent figures, mainly just the theater exclusives for now. I'm trying to keep track of them all. Was 1995 the first year they started doing any kind of translucent vinyl?

I only own 1 clear figure, the 1999 Godzilla Theatre Exclusive (which also appears to be the most common). I know its not the most popular of 'em but I think its great, and it catches the light very nicely.

Mixed - if it's not screen-accurate, that's cool, but if it's just one solid color with nothing else, it bugs me. I like to have a *little* detail. The black MG74 by Bandai is a great good example of this sort of thing, but if it didn't have all the nice little details painted on, I'd pass it up.

The only clear vinyl figure I have is the Asian Fantasy Film Expo 2 Event Exclusive Gomess, which I got in a large lot for $50, and since I still don't have a working camera, the link should have a good image of it.

I've also gone for several other clear vinyl figures, such as one of the Godzilla 2K variants, but I never won one of of Ebay.
