Believe or not I just finished watching the Japanese cut of this movie. Get ready for blasphemy...

I liked the pacing of the US cut more. Doesn't mean I care much for the Raymond Burr scenes but the Japanese cut lacked the intensity I grew up with. I liked where they placed the music and I thought the opening credits in the US version were really nice...

I think some of the scenes they cut of Godzilla trashing stuff was unnecessary though and should be shot for doing so.

Even though this movie isn't my favorite Godzilla movie, the Nuclear Plant Scene and Godzilla vs. Super X are still some of my favorite Godzilla scenes ever filmed. Love that suit too. (Hated the Cybot because it doesn't look the same.)

Uh-oh, be careful with saying this film is dark. Some people might flame you and say it's really boring and one of the worst in the series.

Am I the only one here who got this?

So some find it boring. So what?

Personally I find this and Biollante to be pleasantly dark but whatever.

This movie has so many good memories associated with it I can't help but love it. Even as a wee tyke I was totally into monsters, constantly watching movies like Jason and the Argonauts, King Kong, etc. Hadn't even heard of Godzilla before, so when my dad and older brother introduced me to Godzilla 1985, I sat there awestruck. I probably wouldn't even be on this site if it weren't for that day.

All that said, for my money the battle between Godzilla and the Super X is one of the better moments the entire Heisei series has had to offer. Also the part where Godzilla annihilates the entire defensive line with one blast of atomic breath. Makes me smile every time.

In my official Godzilla power ranking this one is number 2, right behind Gojira.

So you guys can get a grasp on what my tastes are, I'll list my top five.

Gojira
Return of Godzilla
Godzilla vs Biollante
Gidorah the Three Headed Monster
Mothra vs Godzilla

In my opinion, Return is one of the few Godzilla films that can actually be considered a good film, not just a fun, campy monster movie.

I really like the Cold War setting, and the message that the film portrays.

As far as the Godzilla design goes, it may be my favorite. He just looks so freakin' creepy. And for a return to the 54 continuity, it really didn't disappoint.

And being one of the few guys on this board that actually liked the Raymond Burr Godzilla, I love the heck out of his role in Godzilla 1985. And I find his speech at the end to be one of my favorite Godzilla film series moments.

My only problem with the movie is the changing of the suit halfway through the movie. When he first comes ashore to feed at the nuclear plant, the design looks good to me. Later though, when he comes ashore after the military strike, the design was different and much poorer imo. I don't know if anyone else noticed or not, but it always bothered me

Other than the Cybot Godzilla, there were two different heads used on the suit (Either that, or they had two suits, I can't remember). One of them is used sparingly, and can be seen a couple times during his battle with the Super X near the film's climax. The other one is the one you see throughout most of the film.

Had to have been the better one was used more sparingly. A shame really. A real shame

Depends on what one considers to be "the better one".

This is the suit/head seen for the majority of the film.

This is the Cybot Godzilla

I couldn't find any screen grabs of the other head/suit used ("the better one"), but these are the two used most frequently in the film.

One of the darkest Godzilla movies, plus the design is pretty badass.

RoG and Gamera 3, both excellent choices for the fan of giant monster movies which also feature dried-out husks of human corpses.

The corpses in RoG seemed pretty gooey, to me.

I just realized something, Cimmerian. I think your avatar actually uses the alternate Godzilla head that I've been trying to find a decent screen cap of.
