The English dubs

Postby omgitsgodzilla » Sat Sep 04, 2010 7:04 am

Does anyone here agree with me that the English dubs for the Millennium series royally sucked? I mean, TriStar was probably looking to release these fast and cheap, but honestly, a little effort making a new dub would have satisfied me infinitely more than Toho's version. I mean, I usually watch the movies in Japanese and get used to good acting and so on, but then I watch the dub... :freak:
The ones that were released this way...
GXM: This one's not too bad, but the "vanishing up his own butthole" line makes me cringe. I haven't watched this one all the way through, but it's all right, I suppose... Far from good, but not terrible...
GMK: This one is the most watchable for me. I don't know why, but I like this one a lot more than the others.
GXMG: This one's okay too, but saying Mothra was killed makes little sense considering the events of the following movie, and Sara's voice actor was clearly not a kid.
TSOS: I HATE THIS DUB SO MUCH. I hate every single one of the voice actors. That Shun kid is especially annoying since it's pretty clearly an adult forcing a "kiddy" voice.
GFW: I haven't seen this one in a while, but I do remember the acting was over the top, the writing was very cheesy, and Kane Kosugi clearly spoke English very well, so why replace him with a mediocre voice for the dubbed version?
Anyway, whatever your opinion is, post it here...

Well, I don't really care for this kind of stuff. I just want to watch, and enjoy the movie. But, the menus could have been better.

I'd rather sit through the dubtitles.

I use to watch G films with dubs but then I wanted to see the actors and actresses acting to the greatest point so now I only watch japanese language with english subtitles.

I've never watched any of the Millennium films dubbed (sans GODZILLA 2000, obviously) with the exception of MEGAGUIRUS, which I had to sit through at the Pickwick at this year's G-Fest. And man, was it Badddddd. Had I not been there with a group, I probably would have left the screening early. It really made an already bad movie, that much worse. The dub for FINAL WARS is probably bad enough to make a grown man cry..

Really? I found it decent.

It's G2K and GMK's dubs that I just don't like at all.

I thought the dubs for the first three Millennium movies were pretty good, and the dubs for the Kiryu movies were pretty bad.

The dub for GMK didn't seem synced very well, if I remember correctly. But yeah, these are meant for the home market so they just grab anime/cartoon voice actors to make a dub track for these movies.

You know what really spoils a film? When you recognize a voice actor from a cartoon. That blows.

G2K's "looping" was a benefit to the movie. GxM couldn't be saved by a good dub, so they didn't even try. GMK feels a lot less pretentious when dubbed, but the message of the movie is hopelessly lost. GxMG and GTSOS are only hurt by the dub. GFW has the right tone to support a cheesy dub.

I typically prefer subtitles, but a fun dub can really save a lackluster film. Look at GvGigan!

LOL, yeah, my bad. To quote the random scientist in the film "MegaGURus", is definitely one of the worst dubs I've seen for anything..ever.

Yeah, Toho's dubs are worst when there's a major character who's a kid. They need to get real kids to do voices.

I enjoy watching the Millennium movies in subs since I watched Godzilla against MechaGodzilla, Tokyo SOS, and FW in subs then watching the dub. The only Millennium movies I watch in the dub format was G2k, GXM, and GMK.

The American release of Godzilla 2000 had a pretty good dub (or loop). I dug the extra bits of humor inserted. I assume the original dub is just as funky as the ones on the other Sony DVDs.

Godzilla 2000 had a cheesy American dub so it's fun to listen to. I'm pretty sure the International dub is just as bad (Or even worse) than the other Millennium dubs. I think snippets of it were used in the U.S. trailer for Godzilla 2000. I'd rather sit through the dubtitles than hear those terrible voices that have plagued the English dubs since the Heisei series.
