Fixing Toys (Hobby Glue)

Postby HikizuruBeat » Tue Mar 13, 2012 8:13 am

I'm not sure if this the right place and if not sorry.
This has to do with my Sega Gamera 3.

I got mine not assembled so I had to do it myself. The thing is you can't pop the parts into place very well and a lot of sites said I can just glue it together. I tried doing it, but the glue I've been using sucks and doesn't stick very well...
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a stronger glue. I really like my G3 figure and glueing it is really the only way to make it sturdy.

What glue are you using?

Liquid Nail - Clear works the best IMHO. It takes about 24 hours to totally dry though.

DO NOT use super glue, the acid will ruin the vinyl.

lol my Gamera 3 Sega figure needs some repair, too. I've had limited success with the blow dryer method. Maybe one of you experienced folk could detail the steps of fixing warped vinyl.

It was some sort of hobby glue not super glue.

Thanks for the recommendation though. I'll try to see if I can find some of that.

Damn... I got the Sega Gamera and it's never been a problem!

Vinyl wont reshape unless you keep it warm and in the shape you want for awhile.

You sure about that? Almost all vinyl model kits need super glue for assembly.

I dont recommend it. Super glue is not permanent. It actually gets brittle when it gets older.

Glue like Liquid Nail (comes in clear and original/beige, the clear is better) is easier to clean and dries better for interior work. It also stays pliable for about 8-12 hours where you can remove it if you want, or pull the piece apart.

The left foot was warped when I got it--it was a bargain, so I wasn't too bothered, but I'm sick of having cardboard under its foot to keep it balanced.

I bought mine in the bag unopened.
I was pretty naive and thought I could just assemble it, but NOPE.
I had to look it up that you needed glue to make it stay.
The Hobby glue I had was clear too, but it really sucks....
The tail, right leg, and right arm are falling off and it kind of upsets me since I love this figure.

I had to glue my parts on my Sega G3 as well since they kept falling out. Now the thing is nice and sturdy.

The glue I used for it is clear, waterproof, and meant for vinyl supposedly. It's called E-6000 adhesive glue.

Image

Should be able to find it at most craft stores or online. I needed to use an extra amount to keep the tail in, but it worked and the figure stands as it should now quite sturdy. I also used it on a couple other figures and it worked good as well. You should clean up any extra glue after you put the pieces together so you can't see it, but to be honest even if you don't it's hard to spot since it is clear.

The E6000 can be found at Walmart in the craft section for under $5. It works well on plastic & dries clear. If you get any over spill you can gently cut the over spill with an exacto knife & peel it away. I use this on my Stormtrooper armor. I used a 5min 2 part epoxy. Just mix a little at a time & use a toothpick to put where I want. :g2k:

E6000 and Liquid Nail Clear are very similar. Liquid Nail Clear is just alot easier to find and smells less.

I used to sell both at Ace Hardware when I worked there from 2001-2008.

Ok but I assume they hold about the same?
Thanks for the comparison info Wats I'm way indecisive so a slight comparison always helps.

Ive seen Liquid Nail used to hold door thresholds down. Ive used it to hold bolts in on sheds. The shit is tough but stays semi-pliable, so it wont totally stiffen.

^ I can't speak for that brand, but E6000 is ubiquitous to my projects. Like the Frank's Red Hot Sauce lady, I "put that shit on everything". As long as you're careful about applying it neatly, and you let it set for a while, you should end up with a clean, tough, and permanent bond between most common materials (including vinyl).
