Bands you think others should know about.

Postby yaburu » Mon Jul 26, 2010 5:11 pm

This topic is basically for you to spread the gospel of bands who only you seem to be aware of, or who you feel don't get enough credit or simply aren't as well-known as they should be.

For me:

Flaw: I've yet to see another Flaw fan in my entire life, other then, ironically here on TK. Flawedcoil is the only other Flaw fan I've ever seen. They're an amazing band, and Chris Volz has some of the most haunting vocals I've ever heard. He seems to be able to switch from screaming to real, honest to God singing on a dime. Lyrically and melodically, they have some pretty solid stuff going for them. Search them out on Youtube

Fireball Ministry: They had "The Broken" on the Raw Vs. Smackdown 2006 soundtrack, and that's where I found them. Got a nice heavy sound that I dig. "Sundown" is one of my favorite songs.

Alter Bridge: Creed - Scott Stapp + Myles Kennedy = a very kickass band. Myles can sing circles around Stapp on his worst day, and he and Tremonti write some great songs. Tremonti seems to be allowed to flex his guitar chops a lot more with Alter Bridge then he did with Creed, and that only adds to the band. Quickly becoming one of my favorite bands.

Howling Bells - They are a great band, and the lead singer is pretty hot

White Rabbits - Indie group like Howling Bells, very good as well
#1 DEXTER FAN ON TK!

Flaw certainly is a horribly underrated band. They've been my favorite male fronted band since 2001 when I first discovered them. I've seen them live twice and got to meet Chris and Lance at their recent show here in Dayton and even got my pic taken with them. THROUGH THE EYES and ENDANGERED SPECIES are both incredible works. It's such a shame that some other great songs were written for ES, but never got "officially" released. Having said all of that, HOME GROWN STUDIO SESSIONS, was a pretty major disappointment for me because it lacked the fantastic melodies and vocal mixing that the other two albums had. It even ranks below Chris Volz's other shortlived band, Five Bolt Main. But I will forever love the first two Flaw releases.

Gosh there are so many unknown/unsigned bands I love. Six of my top favorites are:

FLAW: (pure awesomeness)
http://www.myspace.com/flaw
THE PANIC DIVISION: (this band is really unique, they mix together an 80's new wave sound & modern rock)
http://www.myspace.com/thepanicdivision
CYRENIC: (my friend Brian is the singer/songwriter. I love the song "Let It Burn" with his sister)
http://www.myspace.com/cyrenicmusic
NOVUS DAE: (great vocalist and musicianship. "2:11" is damn catchy.)
http://www.myspace.com/novusdae
ABSOLUTION PROJECT: (similar to Flaw)
http://www.myspace.com/absolutionproject
ERA FOR A MOMENT: (great female fronted band)
http://www.myspace.com/eraforamoment

I know someone from each of those bands, so be nice. :P
That's all for now.

Atreyu: On the metalcore scene for 10 years, Atreyu knows where to use melodies and when to use breakdowns. If your just getting into them, I highly recommend The Curse, their second studio album from 2004. Just about every song on this album is a rough, thrash, violent piece of music, excluding Blood Children and An Interlude. Off of The Curse, my personal favorite songs are Demonology and Heartache, You Eclipsed by Me, and Bleeding Mascara. If you are looking for something not quite as heavy, then I would go with Lead Sails Paper Anchor, their 4th studio album. If you need even heavier, check out Suicide Notes and Butterfly Kisses, the album that started it all. If you dig them, be sure to check out their other to albums, a Death-Grip on Yesterday and Congregation of the Damned.

Hollywood Undead: A relatively new Rapcore/Rap Metal band that released their first studio album, Swan Songs, in 2008. All 6 members bring a different vioce to the table, and they blend together fantastically. They have a little bit of heavy to them, and emphasize the percussion over the guitar. My personal favorite member is Da Kurlzz, a great drummer, with a loud, powerful, borderline screamo voice. I'd recommend the song Young, it's light on the language, but still has a great beat and is very powerful. Be sure to pick up their new EP, Desperate Measures.

Hypothesis (aka Hyp, formerly NC Instrumental). A neat indie jazz/hip-hop fusion group, their MC's voice is a bit odd at first, but they make good music. They also did some instrumentals for the Phil machinima series. http://www.myspace.com/ncinstrumental

I think unsigned bands themselves are horribly underrated. These people have the true talent. They don't need major labels to show their talent. They have just as much fame as most of the signed bands. And plus, the real music happens in the indie scene. The musicians aren't afraid of conforming to society's idea of music. And at the end, they all have a pretty much stable fan base. The bands do all the hard work themselves, rather than have their labels handle all the strings, and if not, its the fans devotion to these bands that really get them through and help them live their dreams. i would much rather have an indie band than be superstar.

I hope you know you when it comes to music, that is my thing. I am a very honest reviewer when it comes to music and your friends or not. These are some really good bands. I would totally buy their stuff on iTunes. I love discovering new music. I won't really give my reviews here because I do have my opinions and this isn't a review forum but I can say. All these bands have great potential. They all have fantastic talent. And being a major fan of female fronted bands, Era has a great vocalist. It takes a lot of for a woman to have pipes like that. They all are fantastic. thank you truly.

Awesome! Thanks for the honest feedback. :) And yea, I agree with what you said. I am actually becoming somewhat bored with all the Godsmacks, Nickelbacks and Mudvaynes out there. It all seems to sound the same lately. I've been more impressed with indie rock recently. I'm also glad you seemed to like all six bands. There are many others I also love/listen to. Perhaps sometime I will do what I did on other forums I am on and make my own thread on here for introducing/promoting all the rather unknown bands out there that I like.

As far as Itunes go, I am pretty sure all of these bands have albums available on there (I know Flaw and The Panic Division do for sure). I always buy the physical cds myself though, so that's why I am not too sure about the others. I know both albums from Era For A Moment are available on cdbaby.com as both physical releases and digital ones. And yea, Shelby has a pretty awesome voice. :) I love a lot of female fronted bands as well, so I was happy when I came across another good one from America. At any rate, if ya got any questions, feel free to let me know.

Local Black Metal act Ceremonial Castings. They run there own record label and do everything there selves, but listening to there music you'd think they where signed with a big time label concidering how amazingly produced there music is.

Dir en grey. was talking about them in another thread and no one really knows about them so I figured I'd post them here. plus it seems like a lot of you guys like metal and all that loud hardcore stuff and whatnot. I'm not as big into them as I once was but they're still a really great talented band.

they're Japanese btw. so yeah, the lyrics are Japanese. I know some people need to understand the words to enjoy the songs but I think they're great anyway. plus if you read the translations some of their lyrics are really great.

so yeah, here are some of their songs - I tried to pick ones that represented all their different styles but are still more recent.

Hageshisa - their newest single. I'm not a huge fan of it, but you guys might like it.

Dozing Green - this song kicks ten kinds of ass. just listen to it. the video is really cool as well.

Kodou - it's an older song but a lot of people like it so I figured I'd post it.

Fukai - a live song, and one of my favorites if not my favorite. it's beautiful.

that's just 4 of their songs and they've been around for a while now, so yeah. they're always changing their sound so they have a lot of variation in their music. so I would suggest looking through their songs on youtube or something.

Giant Squid are fantastic. The most atmospheric, Meloncholy, poetic rock/metal I've ever had the pleasure of finding. It's a shame they only have two albums.
