They are upscales of Toho Video's mediocre NTSC versions, so no.

I was unaware that Madman used Toho's transfers for the Showa films since I don't have any of those. I figured they used them for the heisei series, but they still look better than those compressed "hd" rips floating around. Although I think for some reason the Heisei peroid films will never look as clean as the Showa or Millenium films.

It's also important to note that, as evident from the subs, those are only from the Japanese version. I believe the US version on Madman's release was fullscreen only, so hopefully no one buys it assuming the US version is widescreen. I think this is also the case with their release of INVASION OF ASTRO-MONSTER.

Wow, so even Madman's release of GODZILLA VS. THE THING isn't in the proper AR? I guess in this case (along with MONSTER ZERO), they were too lazy to even do recreations like what CM did.

I'm surprised by the amount of enthusiasm here. Those screen caps look pretty damn lackluster...just like Toho's R2's in general.

Actually their version of Invasion of Astro-Monster doesn't have the English dub at all.

I'm still baffled that Simitar had access to Godzilla vs. the Thing and Monster Zero in their proper aspect ratios, and even had the Transworld logo for Godzilla, King of the Monsters. What where their sources, and why couldn't subsequent releases (aside from Criterion's) use them?

I'm not completely sure on this, but I think this was mentioned back when they originally came out. Supposedly they had the same widescreen copy of GODZILLA VS. THE THING that Simitar had, but but chose the cropped MonstersHD version because it looked better condition/color-wise.

Why is it so incredibly devoid of color? I don't remember the R2 looking quite this bland..

These dull transfers inspired me to approximate what a few films would look like when put through Toho Video's "shit filter":

I will give them some credit... a few DVDs by them like LATITUDE ZERO and THE LAST DINOSAUR look very good. Everything else, though... blech. The rest don't even look like normal DVDs.

I did those in Final Cut Pro. If I had the right knowledge, I'd make a plugin of the effect.

I thought the Madman transfers suffer also from being upscaled to PAL from NTSC. There's just no damn resolution and the encoding is sucky too.

I may end up tracking down the Toho r2s - anyone got any to sell or trade?

Is it just me, or does Toho's Mothra vs. Godzilla transfer look LD master sourced?

I though Ghidrah looked like a LD source.

King Kong Vs Godzilla is downright awful. It's jagged looking, and there are bits where the pictures breaks into interlacing frames. Audio is naff too.

Returning to the topic of Madman, the audio on their "2.0" tracks on Son of Godzilla and Space Godzilla seem wrong. The former has the music mixed far too loud, but to be fair, this same flaw is on the Japanese track for the US DVD of Godzilla Vs Sea Monster (but not the R4 oddly enough). Space Godzilla - all backgroud foley and a lot of the dialogue is very quiet, then some sound fx and music are deafening by comparison. Is the R2 the same there?

It doesn't look like LD to me, but it definitely looks really faded and washed out. At least it isn't dupey like Toho's DVDs of THE MYSTERIANS, GHIDRAH THE THREE-HEADED MONSTER, WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS, etc.

I know for a fact Toho's KKvsG DVDs were entirely LD sourced from a really subpar LD. The only good thing about them is that they have the original 4-track stereo sound, but I think it's flipped because people talking in one part of the frame come out of the wrong speaker (early stereo movies prominently featured direction sound such as this).

I hope CTHimes doesn't mind this, but you guys should check out this comparison:
