I'd love to see Honda's non-Kaiju movies being released. Having as much of Toho's "normal" filmography would be nice.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I don't think he liked being typecast as purely a sci-fi director, and it's sad that he doesn't really have the name-brand of Akira Kurosawa to get all his films released here.

I mentioned to my dad this weekend that I saw a 3-pack of Toho films and told him I wanted it just for 'Mothra' and he asked me what other films were in it. I told him 'The H Man' and 'Battle In Outer Space' and he freaked out. I guess he has been looking for 'Battle In Outer Space' all his life and could never find it on VHS or DVD. He said that movie and 'The Mysterians' were his two favorite movies when he was younger. Needless to say he made me get on Amazon and order him a copy of that set for him, so I will get to keep 'Mothra'.

Anyways, I would just like to see 'The Return Of Godzilla', 'Godzilla vs. Biollante' and 'Godzilla vs. Megalon' come out on DVD. Then I would want a rerelease of 'King Kong vs. Godzilla' with the uncut Japanese version, and then single disc re-releases of 'Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah', 'Godzilla vs. Mothra', 'Godzilla vs. Spacegodzilla' and 'Godzilla vs. Destoroyah'. After that, just give me the 'Rebirth of Mothra' trilogy and then my collection is complete in my eyes.

KING KONG VS. GODZILLA's Japanese version will likely never get a release over here, so don't hold your breath for that one.

Toho signed away the rights to the film outside of Japan, and it's doubtful that Universal cares enough to it over here. They would have to license the Japanese version from Toho, which requires $, and that's unlikely to ever happen. Add to the fact that the film is one of the most poorly preserved Toho SPX films ever (if not the worst), and all current (official) version sof it look like ass. The film hasn't even been released on Blu-ray yet in Japan, which is likely because of that very reason.

Fine

It's a shame.... It's bad, They need to release all the japanese versions in Amarica, that would be cool.

Better?

To be fair, Toho only released three Showa films on blu-ray.

I asked Toho about this film a few years back. They told me they don't own the foreign rights, and the company that did (Konami, if I remember correctly) wasn't interested in trying to sell it in the US.

Most of Ishiro Honda's non-FX/war movies haven't even been released on video in Japan.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see all three versions of LAST DAYS OF EARTH (a.k.a. Propechies of Nostradamous) in some kind of collector's set. As well as something similiar with THE LAST WAR. I would also like to see a remastered version of GODZILLA VS. THE SMOG MONSTER with the AIP dub track. And of course, a DVD of GODZILLA 1985 featuring all three versions.
Check out the official FB for my upcoming short film, "Destroy All Sisters".

Fixed.

An (official) remastered version of SMOG MONSTER will never, ever happen. Not even having the credits as a separate extra (lke MB's release of DAM) would be possible because Toho literally have no elements of SMOG MONSTER in their "vaults" other than an ancient video master in the improper aspect ratio.

Hopefully, Echobridge will release Biollante sometime this year. Just have to keep our fingers crossed I suppose.

I wouldn't say it is out of the realm of possibility. Several fans own 35mm prints correct? All Sony would have to do is go on the lookout like Criterion did for GKOTM. Sony obviously cares about pleasing fans to some degree after the release of the Icons of Scifi set. They would still need to get approval from Toho though. :freak:

I feel that the only way that could happen would be if another company got a hold of the rights to the Godzilla films that Sony has. In the past, they were only interested in releasing the versions that Toho supplied them (in this case, the international versions), though it's possible that things have changed since then. There have been rumors that Sony has let the rights lapse for some of their films (evident by the now OOP DVD's of their Showa releases), but it's unlikely to be true.

None of the films in the Icons set have international versions, and it's possibly (though somewhat unlikely) that Sony knew they couldn't simply have the dubs as an alternate audio track, since the U.S. and JP versions are all edited differently. Maybe that is one of the reasons it eventually evolved into a much bigger project.

The thought of the possibility of Sony loosing the rights to some of the Showa titles really is fantasy candy to wish that Classic Media would buy the rights to those. Imagine a box set which has every Showa title sans King Kong vs. Godzilla, plus Rodan and WOTG.

I wish we could get high quality Blu-rays of the entire Godzilla series instead of Toho's mediocre "HD" transfers.

CM's DVDs weren't so great visual-wise that I'd wish Sony would lose the rights though.

Classic Media acquired their Toho titles as part of a package when they purchased the film libraries of UPA and Golden Books. They've never licensed a Toho film that wasn't already part of those libraries, and they've said they have no interest in licensing additional Godzilla/Toho movies. So it doesn't matter if any Sony or anyone else loses their rights; Classic Media won't try to pick them up.
