Brad Pitt loves War of the Gargantuas

Brad Pitt loves War of the Gargantuas

Postby hammysammy59 » Sun Feb 26, 2012 6:56 pm

Just got a text from a friend that in a "movies that inspired me" montage during the Oscars, Brad Pitt talked about War of the Gargantuas. Between this and the fact that the Beatrix/Elle fight in Kill Bill Vol. 2 was inspired by WoG's final battle has me convinced that 90% of people in show biz secretly love War of the Gargantuas. So cool to see this movie get love from Hollywood heavyweights.

90% seems like an awfully big estimate based on a couple of instances.

Well yeah, it as an exaggeration made out of excitement and for humorous intent. Though I vaguely remember hearing at least one other story about how WoG influencing a Hollywood production.

On a semi-related note, you gotta love the (maybe coincidental) Godzilla vs Gigan homages in Men in Black: kid doing bizarrely high-level math arouses suspicion (the 17 year-old alien controller in Gigan, the little girl with quantum mechanics books in MiB), and alien cockroaches wearing the skin of dead humans.

Kim Jong-Il's true form in TEAM AMERICA is definitely an homage to GIGAN, too.

Speaking of Kim Jong-Il, he was a fan of Godzilla or so I've been told.

He was. So much so that he kidnapped a director and hired Nakano to do the effects for Pulgasari. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulgasari

There is a surprising amount of people in Hollywood who like/acknowledge WotG. I think that's pretty cool.

I hope the clip pops up on youtube (or elsewhere) eventually so that everyone can see what we're all geeking out about.

I've checked a few times, and so far, nothing seems to be coming up in the various search's that I've tried.

The directors of Crank 1-2 and the new Ghost Rider are fans of War of the Gargantuas as well. Honda does get a good share of love in Hollywood.

THAT was the third anecdote I've heard! Awesome.

Between Half in the Bag and How Did This Get Made, I keep hearing more and more about how the Cranks are so bad it's good, instead of so bad it's awful (which is how they looked at first glance)... I'll have to check 'em out at some point.

I liked Crank, but I thought Crank 2 sucked. Everything was more over the top than the first, but somehow that made each sequence stand out less than it might've if they varied the tone more.

Is good to see a Toho movie being aknowledge in Hollywood and in some movies
as homage. Lets see if this happens to be a sign of Hollywood getting intered in
both Foreign movies and Giant monsters more.
Unstoppable Fury , Unthinkable Power , Unbreakable Will.

I don't really think you should real that much into it. This seems to happen a lot. Someone from Hollywood random acknowledges a random Japanese monster film and everyone then acts as if it means more than it really does.

It does mean something important. It means that a few people might recall that name, and head to Amazon or somewhere looking for the film. Hell, if even one person does that, I'm happy.

And I typed it into the "War of the Gargantuas" thread after hearing it, but what does it matter? Don't sweat it, man! ;)
