Who Laid Minya's Egg?

Postby Patrick Alan » Mon Feb 27, 2012 1:13 pm

I'm not for sure, but I think I remember reading something that said Godzilla did not lay the egg that hatched Minya/Minilla but only adopted the monster as his son. If that's true, then who layed the egg?

I don't think there's ever been any kind of official answer. My best guess is that Minya's mother is long gone, and that Minya's egg is a relic of prehistoric times, potentially mutated or preserved by nuclear bombardment.

This is one thing I love about the Showa series, and I don't mean this sarcastically: if something isn't immediately relevant to the story or characters of the movie, they just don't bother to explain it. It's a giant skreeonk egg with a Godzilla-ish baby monster inside, that's all the characters and the audience need to know, so that's all we're ever told! The guys on the island have no explanation for it, and mom never shows up, so the movie doesn't really waste any more time on it. It makes the movies efficient and it gives the viewer something to wonder about after the movie's over.

The same mentality seems to apply to monsters changing size and coming back from the dead between movies. Love it. This air of mystery doesn't seem to exist so much anymore in modern fantasy and sci-fi movies.

Also, you might want to edit the thread title... as it reads now it looks like you're asking who boned Minya! :freak: You want "laid" instead of "layed." ...and even then you might want to change it to "Minya's egg" instead of just "Minya."

Gigantis :P

There's no official answer. There was an old-timey rumor that G54 and the Godzilla in the rest of the movies were mates or something, but that's... well, obviously, not caught on much.

Except that "Gigantis" and Showa Godzilla #2 are one in the same.

The first Godzilla was apparently female, according to Haruo Nakajima, so some fans like theorize that the egg was the offspring of the first and second Showa Godzilla's. The likely answer is that it was an egg of the same species, which had been dormant on Sollgel Island for thousands of years.

Whether or not the "signal" that the egg sent out was because Godzilla was the father, or simply because of they are of the same species, may forever remain a mystery.

I always liked the idea that Minya is a member of a vaguely Godzilla-like species that is related enough to attract Godzilla. It's a nice and unobtrusive way to expand the universe that there were other bizarre giant sized prehistoric creatures other then just the Godzilla's and Rodan.

Also, Crocodiles and Alligators have been known to protect the young of others when they're in danger. It can easily be applied to Godzilla that he would come to the aid of something that is vaguely like him. Wolves and feral dogs have been known to raise human children as their own and that's even more of a stretch, but it does happen.

I still support that theory, personally. Obviously it's totally unofficial, but I like the idea, it makes sense to be, and it makes the series a bit more poignant (IMO).

The Gigantis thing was only a joke, albeit a somewhat unfunny one.

It must have hurt like hell for whatever laid it. Monster eggs are always so enormous in Toho genre films.

Indeed, look at the size of Mothra's egg and her size, wow.

It mentions in the film briefly that she lays a smaller egg that increases in size as it grows.

Most things do. :P

And considering it takes 9 months for a human baby to grow between conception and birth, and various amounts of time for animals to do the same, it makes no sense to assume the damn thing was that big when it was laid.

When was the Godzilla 54 is a female statement come out?

Anyway Minya's egg is up to fan interpolation mostly. I always say that Minya is a subspecies of Godzilla and that his parents were killed by Godzilla 54 and Godzilla showa felt responsible and took him in.

Godzillasaurus didn't exist until the 90s. At least within the Toho universe.

The best theory I've heard is the one about Godzilla 1954 and Showa Godzilla II being the parents. It's called Son of Godzilla afterall, not Adopted Son of Godzilla.
