omgitsgodzilla-For the most part, I agree with your points on EP 1, except for a couple of things. Jar Jar never bothered me that much personally, but I do understand why he bugs people so much. I don't quite get why you feel the humor in the pod race sequence seemed so out of place. It's not like Star Wars was ever devoid of humor. It worked just fine.
I personally can't stand Jar Jar. He serves little purpose other than a bad attempt at comic relief, and his speech is so irritating. And there was humor in the originals, true, but it was generally far more intelligent than what you saw in Episode I. It focused on the relationships between the characters and brought out important character traits - it had a purpose and it wasn't handled in nearly as goofy a way. It could be serious and funny at the same time. Most of what's in Episode I is stuff like "Haha, Jar Jar is so clumsy!" or "Haha, that alien is cartoonish and has a weird voice!" or "Haha, Boss Nass just did that weird gurgling spitting thing!" or "Haha, the weird pink space camel creature just farted at Jar Jar!" I know Star Wars has always been aimed partially at children, and as such features things designed to amuse them, but Episode I seems to be insulting their intelligence. It's my personal opinion that George Lucas lost his touch in between times, or maybe just stopped caring. The prequels have been panned by most fans and critics, and have only really served to make him richer. "If money is all that you love, then that's what you'll receive" indeed.
