Both kaiju suits look nicely made. I really dig the kiryu suit. this movie is a lot better than GFW.

BAD:
slow placing of the movie, mothra is uninteresting

Good:

What TokyoVigilante said about the Mothra prop.
IMO, Best Godzilla design in the millennium series (no orange beam, green skin, rat face, or pupil-less eyes).
References to Mothra and the characters from that film made it stand out among the millennium films, especially the kid summoning Mothra with the symbol like in the original movie.
Great monster action.

Bad:

Didn't keep the same cast as the previous film.
Godzilla's defeat is pretty much copied from Mothra vs. Godzilla.
Godzilla seemed like more of a plot device than a character. (but done better than in Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth)

The Good;
Nice kaiju designs, some fun lookbacks at previous Toho films, and I always enjoyed seeing people going through the destruction, like the tunnel scene.

The Bad;
Not so great plot, Kameba was a nice easter egg but I wanted more than a dead corpse, and most the film was just one big battle with lots of things happening in it but it felt kind of lacking.

And the Ugly;
None of the characters from the last film, some which were interesting. Godzilla was pulled down to the bottom of the sea and is therefore gone for good, yawn boring ending. An the English dub kept saying MechaG when saying Kiryu would have worked just as fine.
"Well, I've got news for you, pal. You ain't leading but two things right now; Jack and Shit. And Jack left town."

Good - Great looking Mothra. Hiroshi Koizumu is back.

Bad - Basically a repeat of the previous film (with none of its established characters) with a little Mothra vs. Godzilla thrown in.

I gotta admit, one of the best parts of the movie were the Shobijin, they were the best ones yet, but I wanted to see more of them... :dizzy:

Bad: Kiryu had to die -_____-, rlly sucked. We didn't see much of the fairies, and Mothra was uselessly pointless.
Good: Awesome suit for Kiryu, the fairies were incredibly sexy, and a good story.

Tokyo SOS is defiantly not the best Godzilla movie, but I still enjoy for what it is, and I do consider as one of my favorites.

Nice, I agree I really did like the way Kiryu looked in this film, & the Shobijn were kinda cute.

When I was first starting to get into these movies, this was one of my favorites of the series. Nowadays I find it to be pretty average. I like how it ties into the original Mothra, but overall it just feels way to similar to the film that precedes it (which, IMO, it the superior of the two).

I will say, though, Mothra got a fantastic update. And her first appearance is one hell of a scene.

I agree I like how it ties in with the original Mothra, & I like how she looks like she did in the Showa series, but with more of an update.

Liked-

Mothra: I love this Mothra design. It strikes me more as an updated Showa design than a blending of the eras. I loved the look and the execution. Mothra fought and behaved like Mothra should. I especially loved the opening with Mothra and the fighter jets. Superb!

Godzilla: For starters, the head no longer bothers me. I'm glad they added a scar to his chest, which I felt was a nice touch. That sends a clear message to the audience, which is: "Hey, remember the Absolute Zero Cannon and how we bragged about it being very dangerous? Look! It left a permanent mark on Godzilla! We totally didn't forget about it!"

Kiryu: My favorite design of the Kiryu character.

The Battles: It felt like the entire movie was centered around these fights, which will be a gripe of mine soon enough. But I felt they were shot and executed nicely. I wasn't really bored whenever the monsters started brawling.

The SFX: Ah, Toho. You're learning! Some of the best Toho Godzilla SFX scenes took place in this movie.

The Score: It certainly has a huge Godzilla vibe to it. Very memorable.

Disliked-

The Humans: All of 'em were pretty blend, which is a shame. They could've continued Akane's story, since she actually had something called character development in the last movie. Oh well, it was probably for the best because...

The Plot: This is essentially a remake of its predecessor. Don't get me wrong, I like it better, but when all is said and done, it has a huge, "Been there, done that!" vibe to it. The humans were abysmal in their development and the plot was centered around just the monsters fighting. That works if that's all I want, which depends on my mood, but it doesn't make it a rewatchable film. I'll watch it again because I'm a fan, but only, like, once a year. That's a travesty!

The Atmosphere: Y'know how you know you're watching a movie instead of watching a television show? Better yet, y'know how you know you're watching, say, The Return of Godzilla or Godzilla 2000 and not an episode of Ultraman Tiga? It's the presentation. The film content should look more polished, more larger than life. The television format looks like it could've been shot by your neighbor. That's my main critique with most of these Millennium films.

I fully agree with what you said about how the monsters looked in the film, there definitely my favorite designs of the three. To me Tokyo SOS also had the best Mothra song, lets not forget that.

The Ito sisters sung "the best Mothra song". They were real singers, and it showed.

The Good:
  • Hiroshi Koizumi reprising his role from Mothra with enthusiatic dignity.
  • Horny pilot compromises mission, rasing the stakes further.
  • Reversal of roles: Godzilla is the robot, and Mechagodzilla the living force.
  • Kiryu's character comes full circle.
  • The miniatures, Mothra's prop, pyrotechnics, CGI effects, etc.
  • One of the longest and better choreographed battles in the series.

The Bad:
  • Slows down horribly after the fanstastic opening scene, and takes a while for the film to pick up.
  • Oshima's Godzilla theme is not menacing enough. I could never get the popularity.
  • The Godzilla suit, I could never get the popularity.
  • Akane, arguably one the most interesting characters in the series, exits the film early on.
Every film should have at least one animal attack.

Yeah, it is a shame Akane was only in Tokyo SOS for a short period, definitely the one big problem I had with the movie. Other than that, I still enjoy Tokyo SOS for what it is.

The Good: Almost everything.
The Bad: Akane's sweet ass was barely in the film.

The Good:All in all, the flick is pretty decent overall.

The Bad:While intended to be a cameo, the turtle kaiju, Kamoebas, should've been given more screentime than having his dead carcass show up on the beach. I thought Tezuka should've had a scene featuring the Yog-Spawn on the rampage in the beginning of the fli. ck paralelling Mothra's appearance. Basically doing in a small island fishing village during a storm, and while Kamoebas is in the middle of said rampage. We see something rising form the ocean, and then a shadow covers the turtle, who looks up. The screen switches to black, and we hear a distinctive roar. We can surmise how that fight turned out from the beach scene.

The absence of a scene leading up to Kamoebas's demise has nothing to do with the quality of the film itself.

Kiryu

Postby Godzilla165 » Sun Jun 24, 2012 9:48 am

Just something I noticed when watching Tokyo S.O.S last night, Kiryu didn't seem as energized and hyper as he did back in Godzilla against MechaGodzilla. He seemed to be more passive, and bored through out the movie when he was fighting. He didn't roar as much and didn't throw any real punches. Why is that? And another thing, what did they mean when they said Kiryu was luring Godzilla to him? Could Godzilla sense his soul or something?
