I think you've misread what Theme we're referring too.

My bad.
Honestly I wouldn't mind some of the theme's redone or used as a nod in the film

Yes, it should be in the film. Either in the credits, or at the beginning, if they don't want to use it when Godzilla actually appears. It's gotta be in there somewhere.

To me, this is like asking if Godzilla should breathe fire or not.

Aside from Godzilla still being indestructible, with his recognizable dorsal spines, charcoal grey skin, famous roar, & his blue atomic ray, YES the movie should indeed have Godzilla AWESOME theme song. Sure they can throw in new & awesome sounding, but he still needs his theme song.

Godzilla is never indestructible. In his very first film, he gets disintegrated into nothing. Funny thing, the only other time he died, he also gets disintegrated.

I take back what I said before. I'll wait to see if this Goji is it's own monster like the 98 version. If it is, then it should get it's own theme. If it's somehow a sequel/remake that follows after the 54 Goji, then I'd probably like to here the Ifukube theme. But I'd like it done by another composer.

There are certain things about the Godzilla franchise that make it Godzilla. This includes suitmation and certainly the music. The music, in particular Ifukube's music, is just as vital to the Godzilla series as the scores to Star Wars or Indiana Jones are to those films. Or think of the importance of music to the James Bond series. Or the importance of having a Danny Elfman score in a Tim Burton film. It seems that most major movie franchises (but not all) have one thing in common...a very important musical thread that holds everything together.

We simply cannot imagine those films without their iconic scores or composers. So, if we are fashioning a new Godzilla movie with a promise from the producers to stay true to the original spirit of the character (and yes, Ifukube's music IS a part of Godzilla's character), the music should play some role. Even if it is only played at a key moment in the midst of someone else's full score. But it should be there. (And so should suitmation, but that's a discussion for another thread.)

Anyway, we can all agree that the downfall of the '98 distater was a blatant disregard for the source material in an effort to "modernize" or "reimagine" the Godzilla mythos. Not wanting the to make the same mistakes of the Emmerich/Devlin debacle, Legendary has vowed to stay true to the Godzilla character. The director Edwards even confirmed in an interview that he is "a fan." Is this a convenient thing to say, or is he a real fan like all of us? I fear it's the former and not the latter, but that remains to be seen.

So, Mr. Edwards, Godzilla fan-boy, how true will you be?

If Godzilla is going to have spines on his back, radioactive breath and a signature roar, than we should hear at least a snippet of the famous theme. That's my opinion, and I hope the producers have as much respect for the series as all of us.

I thought Godzilla vs the Sea Monster, Son of Godzilla, Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 1974, Godzilla X Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS were all fine films with great soundtracks and non of them used an Ifukube theme.

So no, it's not essential.

I think, though, the most iconic films in the series are the ones with Ifukube scores. Sato was a great composer and his Godzilla scores are at least good, but they simply do not embody the series the way Ifukube's music does.

I'm more dubious about Oshima. I find that her music lacks originality, but she pulled of some nice moments in some of her music.

I just think this movie needs to have it's own identity. New era, new filmmakers, new Godzilla, new start. Tying it back to specific themes that, while iconic, have been used and abused in newer Toho productions the same way they'd probably be used in this film seems pointless. Give a new composer the ability to make a new score their own. "Godzilla popping out of the water accompanied by an Ifukube theme", to me, has become overplayed.

Ever since I became a Godzilla fan as a child I NEVER felt that Ifukube's scores (or any music in the films for that matter) were a key part of Godzilla. The monster himself is what made Godzilla who he is. He's been different characters. He's been both border-line retarded and nearly as intelligent as a human. As long as he still looks and acts like Godzilla, he's Godzilla. The stories are also a key part of defining what Godzilla is. They've made him a villain, a hero, and some things in between. So no, I don't think we need Ifukube's score... at all. It's become boring and nearly predictable in its use at this point. Besides, this is an entirely new Godzilla. I want the team at Legendary to bring their own creations to the table. We, as a fandom, NEED something fresh. The same ol' Ifukube score isn't going to deliver that. You want Ifukube that badly? Watch one of the Toho movies.

They could always go back to how the theme was originally used and have it for the military.

Aren't there a different number of theme songs for Godzilla? Personally though, since it will be an American production that is supposed to redeem Hollywood after GINO, I think keeping the traditional themes would be a good step toward making the new film the farthest thing from the bastardization that the first attempt was.

At the very least have some version of one of the classic military marches. Those always seemed to go hand in hand with how confrontations between the military and the Toho monsters would go and were always one of the more exciting elements of the films.

Just look at the difference Akira Ifukube's music makes in the Japanese cut of Rodan, then compare it to the American version with the music largely replaced. Ugh.

A better question would be which Big G theme should be use for the movie.
