Was the showa era too cheesy?

In my opinion, some of the showa films are way too cheesy.

A prime example would be Godzilla jumping and dancing in IotAM, or Godzilla and Hedorah's "eyeballs".

They are cheesy, but that's what makes them fun to watch

Yep, the cheesiness is part of the fun and charm of the movies.

There's worse. Truly I don't find it 'too cheesy'. Then again, that phrase has different value for every person

By the way, I love the Showa series.

Well the camp factor and later appeal to children is what helped keep the Godzilla franchise last as long as it did in the Showa era.

Were some of the Showa films cheesy? Yes.

Were they TOO cheesy? Nah.

Honestly, I wish some movies (Showa or otherwise) were a little cheesier. The camp factor is the biggest appeal to non-fans, and makes the movies more fun to watch in a party-type setting.

It's a really interesting balancing act though. Of course I still want Godzilla and the monsters to be bad-ass. Even in the Showa movies, with varying levels of corniness, the monsters still kick major ass.

I think the 60's movies are slightly cheesy, but the true cheese comes from the seventies.

I don't think they were too cheesy considering when they were made. In fact I don't think "cheesy" was even a word yet. These films were just the sign of the times. Cheesy was the norm in the 70's, not the exception.

Sure several of the Showa films were cheesy (especially in the 70's) but they were much more enjoyable that way and the camp adds to the enjoyment factor

No. There were only a few moments of "cheese" in the Showa series. Godzilla dancing in Invasion Of The Astro-Monster, Godzilla flying in Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla's tail slide in Godzilla vs. Megalon and maybe a few others I can't think of right now.

Outside of those, the Showa series wasn't "cheesy".

this.

Also i've seen some awful non-godzilla movies from the 70's that make Godzilla vs Megalon (or even some of those Gamera movies) look like friggen works of art.

The 60s and 70s films were cheesy in places, but that's what makes the films enjoyable. Those campy scenes (or whole movie) were what young audiences wanted, and I'm willing to bet it was part of what made them fans of Godzilla.

In general, I don't think so. I enjoyed many of the films from the Showa era, with the exception of the Gamera films. Those were just over the top in terms of campy; even as a kid, the target age for these movies, I couldn't bring myself to like them. The only cringe-worthy film from the Godzilla franchise for the showa era, in my opinion, is All Monsters Attack/Godzilla's Revenge.

60's Showa had the right blend of coolness, drama and cheese.
