What was "THE GODZILLA"?

Postby gatorzilla » Tue Feb 07, 2012 6:19 pm

Before Final Wars was announced for awhile the 50th anny film was being called THE GODZILLA

why? was that the original idea? or just rumor?

I think it was just a place holder name until they decided on a title.

Could be wrong though.

It was a tentative title created as a placeholder.
But I, that am not shaped for sportive tricks
Nor made to court an amorous looking-glass;
I, that am rudely stamped, and want love's majesty
To strut before a wanton ambling nymph.

Imagine if it had actually made it as far as production under that title. Serious Engrish shit right there...

Serious Engrish or a slam against GINO saying "this is the 'REAL' Godzilla"? ;)

You decide.

I thought it was weird how Final Wars ends with GODZILLA in big blue letters instead of the title of the movie.

Gamera 3 kind of did that too with GAMERA 1999.

It was the original name for Final Wars and it had different monsters I think?

I believe MechaGodzilla was going to be in it and Jr would have been the Godzilla with Destroyer as the final villain.

Wow, that actually sounds better than the fiasco that was FW.

^Sounds like a sequel to Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. I would love to see Destoroyah in a modern film.

I believe Toho was going for a worldwide release for Final Wars so they didn't want to connect it to any other continuity.

A while back, I was hearing that the original plan for GFW was for it to be a continuation of the Heisei series.

I could be wrong. However, in a hypothetical sense, it would've been a lot more awesome if we could've followed Jr. as he reigns as the new King of the Monsters.

After wasting all that money with Godzilla films that had little to do with each other like every year of Power Rangers , it was a long time coming.

A Heisei continuation I say would have been ALOT better than the crapfest we got. TOO many monsters in such a short time span it was almost comical, than there were Xmen Sentai Rangers born from the blood of Gigan with a stereotypical black pimp guy trying to rob some white people with a gun...I bet if I was high, that'd be an actually great film but really, it sucks. Worst. Fanfic. Idea. EVAR.

And it's not like people would be isolated by continuity. Just throw splashes of it in there and make only the fans know. Even if it was, many people watch those films for the monster fighting smack down, not for the plot. But if they do, they'll probably look it up and watch it. It's not like you'd have to watch any of the films in a precise order . I didn't and I did not ever get a heart attack from it.

The film is actually a hoot if you watch it drunk and with friends. ;)

But yeah, GFW did come off as a badly written fanfic. I am not a Kitamura fan at all (I saw his other films and didn't care for them), and I believe that GFW would've been a much better film if it was under different direction. I believe that Kitamura wanted to bring back the campiness of the Showa films for Final Wars, but what he did was just overkill. He took a relatively familiar and acceptable plot, and just force-fed it a bunch of junk food until it puked up the final film. While I did enjoy SOME of the fight scenes in the film, I found the rest of the film a snorefest really. The first half of the film after the monsters raiding cities all around the world was too long and didn't reveal anything new. It was predictable. The ending was to cliche as well with Ozaki's final line being the most cheesy of them all. While much of the music was just ok, I cringed at Keith Emerson's inclusions. They were childish, corny, and had no place in the film, ruining whatever tone it had.

I just hope Toho learned their lesson and that their next outing (whenever that would be) will NOT be a crap-fest like GFW and find a fine line between making a good Godzilla movie, and the cheese factor. I was not satisfied with GFW being the closing film of the Millennium series. I certainly hope that the next Toho series will have continuity between films, and actually hire good writers, and a good director.
