are you more of a scifi fan or monster movie fan

Postby thatsoundman » Mon Feb 13, 2012 10:00 pm

Curiousity is a bad thing sometimes and it has become apparent to me that there are a lot of general monster movie fans and then there are a lot of scifi fans. in some respect the 2 cross, but in many they do not, so what are you more of: monster movie fan or scifi fan? :D

Not a huge fan of sci-fi (generally speaking), but I love me some giant monsters and dinosaurs.

I love to see a giant monster or two (obviously), but some of my favorite films are kaiju-less Sci-Fi. 2001, Soylent Green, A Boy and His Dog, The Omega Man, Pal's Time Machine and War of the Worlds, the Star Trek flicks (the first two, especially).

So, I'm both, definitely.

I love the 1950's to 1970's Toho monster and sci/fi films, but am not really interested in any that are made by others (with the exception of the original Star Wars). Even though the Toho films are mostly low budget, they did put work and care into them so that they look good. I loved the old Gamera movies as a kid but won't watch them nowadays because they are so incredibly cheap looking.

Hmm. I guess I know more about Star Wars than your average joe, dangerously close to SW nerd land in fact. I also certainly don't mind other sci-fi's. I liked Avatar I guess, and I find the Transformers movies to be the best of all "eye candy flicks" out there right now. I also still know plenty about Bionicle and the mythos.

As for monster movies... I love Godzilla, Heisei Gamera, and Toho kaiju films, and the Showa Gamera movies are okay too. Some like Barugon are great, but others, not so much. Also, I have the Showa Gamera series to thank for getting that Gamera song stuck in my head. It's been months since I last saw a Showa Gamera film, and that theme is still stuck in my head! Gamera aside, I have also recently found some old 50's monster movies on iTunes: Beast of 2000 Fathoms, Black Scorpion, and It Came From Beneath The Sea. I'm exited to watch these, and on top of that, I am also eager for Pacific Rim, Godzilla 2014, Jurassic Park 4, and the like. However, I am not super exited for any upcoming Sci-Fi movies.

I guess over all, I am more of a monster fan then a sci-fi fan, but that doesn't mean I dislike sci-fi either.

and i thought i was a rare breed in liking such movies as these, actually got rapped for liking them, only i have never seen a boy and his dog.

of the odd classics i have {20 Million Miles to Earth, attack of the 50ft woman, the 1957 version of cyclops, the giant behemoth, kronos, krull, mighty joe young(both versions), and the movie that started godzilla and gamera - the beast from 20,000 fathoms. plus all the gamera's, godzilla's, rodan's, frankenstein conquers the world in both eng and jap, and many, many others

Both, mostly monster movies though. There are several Sci-Fi and horror films I like that don't have monsters in them, but I usually enjoy the ones with monsters a lot more.

if you really believe that then i would like to challenge you to watch the movie gamera the brave made in 2006, it is well done and the eng translation is even done with much care, i know the originals were a little cheesy, but they were made for kids the final 4 movies were made for the kids growing up watching those movies.... now dont get me wrong, they are kid friendly but not cheesy, also there is a trilogy that was just released that was produced within 10 years of this one that none of those are for kids at all, truly monster movie fans for the 90's.

^ Not to burst your bubble or anything but.. I'm pretty sure just about everyone here knows about all of those films. I'm just saying since you took your time to even add the posters but it's not necessary.

Both I guess. Not all monster movies are sci-fi and vice versa. Godzilla and The Host are more like dramas to me. Host even has a little comedy in it.

had never thought of these a pure drama movies, but, your right there is a lot of drama in them... character building, (then killing), but that is the way of the monster movies.... and that is only part of the fun.

Monster movies often fit into the scifi category. You really can't like one without liking the other.

Can giant Monster movies NOT be Sci-Fi?
Don't try to be something else. Don't try to be less. Great things are going to happen in your life. Great things. And with that will come great responsibility.
