Favorite Gigan and Ghidorah Incarnations

I ask this cause a lot of fans are divided. On one hand, a lot of fans like Gigan's new look in Final Wars. More menacing, and just plain cool. However, at the same time, the classic one had more of an upbeat character, rather than being more of an assassin working for the Xiliens. So the first question is which do you prefer: Final Wars Gigan, or Showa? Personally, I like the Final Wars one in both look and character, but the Showa one should be the definitive look.

Next up, King Ghidorah. A lot of purists will say that the Showa look is their favorite. Some might say they like the Heisei update, and many would say Grand King Ghidorah. A few may even say they like the GMK look the best, with an even smaller few saying they like Kaiser Ghidorah.

So first, which look do you like the most? The classic Showa, Heisei, Rebirth, GMK, or Final Wars? I have to go with Grand King Ghidorah pretty easily. First of all, he actually looks like a world destroyer, a space demon. GMK I gotta say is the worst design. (Yes, I preferred Kaiser to it.)

And finally, which incarnation of character do you like the most? Granted, aside from GMK, they're pretty much the same. Do you prefer the Showa one with his heads always moving and with his wings always making sounds when they flap, the ultra serious Rebirth one, or the heroic GMK one?

BONUS QUESTION: Did you like that Grand King Ghidorah used the Heisei's Ghidorah's roar?

Gigan: Final Wars Gigan 1. The revised version with the saw arms is cool, but the first one in the movie looked great. Showa Gigan gets a special place in my heart, but GFW Gigan it is.

King Ghidorah: I love the Heisei KG's updated look, but in terms of actual execution it was very stiff and lacked the variance in the audio sounds it made. But for sheer design, Heisei it is.

Gigan: Showa. GFW looked too robot-y.

King Ghidorah: It's pretty much a tie between Showa and GKG. Heisei's too bland for my taste, and GMK Ghids looks fugly, IMO.

Gigan: Like most of the wasted monster designs, I actually find this one superior to the original (who I also love).

King Ghidorah: For sheer epic design Grand King Ghidorah is it. I would've put Showa, but his hairy tufts on his head bug me.

Showa Gigan, but I thought the F.W. design was a pretty good update.

Visually, Grand King Ghidora wins the other comparison by a landslide. However, I like his spastic Showa personality.

Yeah man, in Showa he worked for the Nebulans!

I like Showa Gigan better because he's just a wildly hip 1970's monster. His revamp is cool too, I just like Showa better.

Ghidorah I like in a mix of ways. His Showa personality and Heisei look. Never seen ROM3 so I can't comment on Grand KG.

^Ah yes, he was the Nebulan's top dog. Only there he seemed to be doing it out of his own free will. (Aside from Godzilla vs. Gigan.)

I’ve never understood what the big deal is about Grand King Ghidorah and never will. Things fat and stiff as hell, with huge clunky legs. It flight it looks… uncomfortable. It’s nice but not nearly as good as the sleeker, meaner, more well-proportioned ’91 incarnation.

My favorite Ghidorah is the original Tsuburaya masterpiece hands down. As for Gigan, well as far as I’m concerned Gigan doesn’t even exist outside of his Showa incarnation,

^ For me, I just like that look of mass. I don't think he's as obnoxiously fat as most of the Heisei series suits.

Granted, he doesn't look that great in flight, but that's a minor quibble for me.

Showa Gigan, by far as "The" design for the character. It defined what Gigan is; a potbellied, brightly coloured cyborg goon employed by aliens. I also love the Final Wars design, but only in the context of Final Wars. They changed his design to fit the style and aesthetic of that film and that's how it works. Otherwise, it looks like someone desperately tried to badassify up a perfectly fine design in every tacky way imaginable. There are some elements of the FW design I'd like to see incorporated into a more Showa look; specifically the neck brace and the shape of the claws.

I prefer Showa King Ghidorah because of how strongly associated that design is with his specific origin of being a planet-killing extraterrestrial menace. I think the Heisei look is just as splendid, but that's just the design. Death Ghidorah is skreeonk awesome, but not as a standard design, and the Grand King Ghidorah is also a magnificent prop with a great cinematic persona (willing himself back into existence to eat kids is just to wonderfully villainous).

I like the GMK Ghidorah design, but I generally prefer portrayals that give it more traditional Ghidorah proportions; huge wings, long necks, thicker legs. There's a couple high end models that do this and I'd accept these "inaccurate" versions as a standard Ghidorah, but from strictly the film it's much to small. Also screw heroic Ghidorah.

Kaiser Ghidorah is kinda' cool. I love his beam powers and the whole "energy vampire" angle and a couple details (specifically the segmented neck armor), but overall it's the weakest look for the character.

Design don't hold up jack when there's no personality and character to speak of. I've seen GvsKG far more times than ROM3, and yet I can't tell you sh*t about Ghidorah's personality in that film, namely because it was non-existant.

I like Gigan FW better in terms of design and powers, but Showa better in terms of personality and combat skills.

As for Ghidorah, this is my personal list, as I view Keizer, Grand, and GMK as too different to be "King" Ghidorah:

1. King Ghidorah
2. Grand Ghidorah
3. Death Ghidorah
4. Mecha King Ghidorah
5. Keizer Ghidorah
6. Guardian (GMK) Ghidorah
7. Dorat Ghidorah (he gets last because he ruined King Ghidorah, and he is not different enough that I can identify them as different creatures)
