A small percentage of DVDs will always fail. It is just a rule of logic. The more there is of something being produced, the higher numbers of possible defects. Eventually, you are going to run across a daulty disc. I once bought Die Hard and the disc had everything but the movie! Every once in a while, I get a DVD where it freezes up at a certain spot for a very long time, and I end up having to skip that part.

There are more things to consider. If a disc is to moist or cold, like if you are in a room with neither air conditioning or furnace heating (like if you rent out someone's furnaced garage), or if your player doesn't have the space to properly ventilate (which a massive pet peeve of mine, and a reason why many people seem to go through gaming systems and dvd players so quickly), if you like to leave your discs sitting around like drink coasters, if you have a really old/cheap player (one player I had had issues with dual layer DVDs and would pause permanently when the layers changed), but the likeliest of scenarios is that you just got a faulty disc.

However, if your player is old, I would look into buying a new one. They are relatively affordable these days.

The Meida Blasters DVD of DAM does have a slow layer change - just before the Tokyo attack.

I'm still trying to find a DVD player that DOESN't show layer changes. They are invisible on my PC but that's not attacked to my telly!

It happens to me too, but it's so brief on mine that it's at most a minor annoyance. I'd have to agree with everyone else here, try a different player, disc or both.

i just got this dvd yesterday and i had the same problem but when i tried it on a different dvd player it played just fine. This was my first time ever watching this movie (suprising because im a godzilla fan and this is a well renound godzilla film) and i must say it wasnt quite as good as i expected it to be but it is a very good addition to my collection.

The disc does seem to have issues in certain players, although I'm having trouble determining what the overlapping theme might be. If I had the DVD version, would start testing it in my armada of DVD players to see what works and what doesn't, but sadly only have the Blu-ray for the Media Blasters release.

Right now there are only 4 reviews on Amazon that mention the defect, but out of 33 reviews that means 12% of them reference the problem. So this doesn't appear to be something that the majority are suffering from, but certainly widespread enough that it goes beyond what I would consider normal compatibility issues. Sadly, I wager Media Blasters is too busy sorting out stuff with Toho right now to pay this as much attention as they should.

Curious, what player type was the one that had trouble with the disc?

I got it too, it was a cheap Philips portable DVD player (one of those little folding ones, laptop-style, you know). It only really froze for like a half/quarter second or so.

If it was just for a split second or so, that sounds like the normal pause when the DVD changes layers for dual layer DVDs. If it continued past the split second skip, its the error being talked about here for certain players trying to watch the DVD.

Well this happened multiple times during the final act of the film, like many people are saying. Perhaps I should have been more clear.
