HDTV set up help needed

Postby Godzilla 2000 » Mon Feb 06, 2012 11:34 pm

Ok, so I got a new HDTV, and its been swell so far. But, there's just one problem; my DVDs look like crap on it.

Here's my setup as of now:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3768.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3798.jpg

I color-coded this image so you clearly see what goes where.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... 8-Copy.jpg

Now my equipment:
A JVC HDTV with full HD and HDMI.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3781.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3779.jpg

An esa DVD/VHS player with Progressive Scan (no idea how that works).
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3775.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3776.jpg

And a Bose sound system with some nice speakers.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3782.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3783.jpg

Here are all the plugs and wires I got going on.

JVC:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3799.jpg
esa:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3802.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3804.jpg
Bose:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3801.jpg

But for some reason, but DVDs come out looking pretty bad. Here are some shots from the Spacegodzilla/Destoroyah DVD menu.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3792.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3784.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3793.jpg

And no, its not my camera. That is exactly how pixalated it is. Whats weird is for a split second after a page loads, the quality will look fine, then downgrade.
Example:
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3790.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3791.jpg

The movie itself doesnt fair much better.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3795.jpg

I do have some HD cables that can run from the JVC TV to the esa player.
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3805.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3807.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3806.jpg

But they dont do anything. Not a thing. Even playing with the esa's Video settings (switching between S-Video & Component) does nothing. Hell, even putting these supposed HD cables into the regular gives me the exact same level of quality! Hows that work?

Now, the Xbox 360 can play HD stuff just fine. Games look great (set at 1080i).
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3821.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3810.jpg

And once I put my DVD in...
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3812.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3818.jpg
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b387/ ... G_3816.jpg

Yeah. Looks good. Still not 100% but that can probably be attributed to the DVD itself. It aint exactly breathtaking no matter how you watch it.

So basically what I need help with is; can anyone think of a way to make this mess work? The esa DVD/VHS player apparently cant do HD despite having the plugins for it, and me having the cables to do it. Is it just not compatible with my JVC TV? Is there some setting I need to adjust to make it look NOT shitty?

Also, what is best for playing regular DVDs on a 360?

480p, 720p, or 1080i?

The issue is you're using composite cables (the yellow, white and red) they suck, either go to component (Red, Green Blue) or HDMI.

Then you won't get to view your stuff in HD. Simple as that.

That still doesnt explain why my current HD cables arent doing anything.

I mean if they dont change a thing, why bother getting HDMI? I would need to buy a whole new DVD player and sound system.

The Esa DVD/VHS player is not HD. You cannot get HD from a non-HD appliance.

That's not for HD, that's for other components I believe like surround sounds. But the Esa DVD/VHS itself ISNT HD.

You need to use the XBOX for the DVD. And VHS isnt in HD so no matter what you do, it wont ever be as high quality as it is on a regular tube TV.

Well thats unfortunate.

Ugh, I hate using my xbox for DVDs. I have the regular model, and its loud as shit.

Frank just because component is used for HD doesn't mean everything with those outputs is HD for example the Wii uses component cables but it doesn't output in HD.

What you do is buy a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Player. Should come with HDMI Cable too, if not buy extra. Now it's gets Complicated. Take the HDMI Cable and there should be two peewees (male parts) one on each end of HDMI chord, and two female parts one on back of your Blu-ray/DVD player and another on the back of your HD TV. Take the penis(male part) of your HDMI chord and shove it into the vajayjay(female) on the back of the TV. Now take the other end of the HDMI cord and there's should be another pecker(male) to slip/slap right into the vagina(female portion)on back of Combo Player, and now you can watch Blu-Ray/DVD Movies in FULL HD!

Fun fact all Blu-ray players can already play DVDs.

who is the supplier of you cable?

mainly, the bose only needs to see the audio out from the tv, then it will take that and give you adequate audio, (not a fan of bose) (audio engineer for 30 yrs., plus taught this technology for 10)

the red, grn, and blue on the vhs/dvd player is just for the output of the dvd player video and is only 420p and that is all, plus you must run a red/white for audio seperately to hear the sound from the dvd section, otherwise you will either have silence or the colors will be messed up. your vhs section would have to be wired seperately on the yell, red, white.....
most gaming systems these days have hdmi and component on them along with composite...x-box 360 is no exception to this rule. you can run gaming systems on composite (red, white and yellow) and it will look just fine.
question how many hdmi ports do you have?
if only one then there are hdmi switchers that work fairly well and would help. if you need any other help, please pm me and i will be happy to assist
