The movie opened to record opening day sales and fell sharply afterwards. In the end it made about $33 million in Japanese theaters. "That's better than the 1990s Godzilla movies, but not significantly."

That's sad.

I thought the movie would do poorly in Japan since the movie been out for two months by the time it cameout in Japan, and people in Japan by now would hear how awful the movie was.

In terms of tickets sold, GODZILLA actually ranks as follows for the 1990's films:
1. Godzilla vs. Mothra - 4.2 million
2. Godzilla vs. Destoroyah - 4 million
3. Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II - 3.8 million
4. GODZILLA - 3.5 million
5. Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla - 3.4 million
6. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah - 2.7 million
7. Godzilla 2000: Millennium - 2 million
So, not counting for inflation, it actually did on par with what the 1990 films were doing... dead smack in the middle in fact.
