How did the Japanese react?

I know that TriStar's movie (GODZILLA, for those too daft to figure it out) has been panned by most traditional *American* Godzilla fanatics, but what was Japan's response? To dumb it down further, was it just as unpopular there as it is here?

Well, consider that tickets probably cost more in '98 than they did through '91 - '95. Not to mention GODZILLA probably had a MUCH wider release than the Heisei Godzilla films due to it being a major American blockbuster. In terms of attendance, I would be surprised if GODZILLA was anywhere near the numbers for the highest grossing Heisei installments.

That was because of the hysteria, the hype, publicity everywhere... It would've been the same if the movie was bad... oh wait.

I heard Japanese fans were really unhappy with the film. They felt, as LG1979 said, betrayed. They thought they were gonna get a (fairly)faithful representation of Godzilla, with(most likely)better special effects. Did they get that? Not really.


Probably, they're more worried about Legendary Picture's Godzilla film than we are. They're afraid it's gonna happen again, probably.

I doubt it since it seems like we are in good hands so far. And that it's still too early to tell, and I have a feeling it will be much better then G98 since most reboots are always better then the first movie (I have not seen a reboot worst then the first).
