Pokemon WTF's: what toho did wrong

The recent half-dozen or so Pokemon movies have used Toho kaiju roars for those of the legendary Pokemon in the films. For the most part, the audio aesthetic doesn't match the visual. But, to answer the question, it's all just a time/money saver so they don't have to create new clips.

Why would this go in the Video Game Hub? The question is about the films, which Toho distributed.

Toho doesn't make the Pokemon movies; they just distribute them in Japan. The animation is done by OLM, Inc and the films are co-productions between Nintendo, Creatures, Game Freak, TV Tokyo, ShoPro, and JR Kikaku so the stories, sound FX, etc are their call, not Toho's.

The reason classic Toho monster roars can be heard in some Pokemon movies is that Toho is one of the studios that has licensed their sound library to other companies. Rather than create their own roars the Pokemon crews just pays to use existing sound FX. I've heard Toho, Daiei and Tsuburaya Pro sounds in a number of different movies and shows.

You know how I always say this site considering Toho-distributed films "Toho films" is something that can really confuse a lot of people? This thread is absolute proof of this.

I think the next time I see a thread about favorite music in a Toho movie I'm going to mention the Disney movies they released in Japan. Those must count, right?

I love hearing Godzilla monster sounds in Pokemon movies. In my head it turns into a fun game of guess that monster.

You may want to take that up with the site Admins then. I know I got harassed about creating posts regarding studio Ghibli films (which are distributed by Toho) and there is a whole submissions section dedicated to Studio Ghibli concept art, and movie reviews etc... I just think we need to be reasonable, ansd say if a film is made in Japan and is distributed by Toho, then it probably is appropriate to discuss on this site.

If you want to site Disney movies distributed by Toho in Japan as a reason we should NOT talk about any distributed movies, only Toho direct films, then I guess we should banish all Heisei Gamera threads, because those were only distributed by Toho, not made by Toho themselves. See what I mean, it can get tricky.

Or list down the Crank films if someone mention their favorite Toho action movie since Toho distributed them in Japan ! Toho always have been known for re-using sound effects, so using monster roars for Pokemon is not a big surprise. Toei does the same thing with there anime as well.

I think some people see Toho's name on a movie or see a movie listed in one of the main sections here and assume Toho was directly involved in making that film. But Toho's role varies greatly from one film to the next, with (at least) four key divisions...

1. Toho productions: This would be any movies made by Toho employees and financed, distributed and owned by the studio. This would include most of the films that likely come to mind when we think of Toho... the Japanese Godzilla series, early Akira Kurosawa films like SEVEN SAMURAI, and classic FX films like RODAN and MOTHRA. In recent years, Toho seems to have stopped (or drastically curtailed) making films completely in house.

2. Co-productions: Movies made by Toho but with another company involved during pre-production, production or financing. Toho did a number of these... kaiju films like WAR OF THE GARGANTUAS with UPA, KING KONG ESCAPES with Rankin/Bass, the KILLING BOTTLE with Takarazuka, etc.

3. Partnerships: Several companies work together to finance, produce, distribute and internationally market a movie. This appears to be the most common method movies are now made in Japan; it seems like every Japanese studio film in recent years is credited to a "Film Committee" or "Film Partners"... including Toho releases like SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO, the ALWAYS- SUNSET ON THIRD STREET series, GANTZ and GANTZ II, the 20TH CENTURY BOYS trilogy and so on.

4. Distribution: These are movies Toho didn't make but handled the theatrical and/or home video release in Japan. This would include American and foreign movies, some of the Ultraman and Gamera films, Pokemon movies, etc.

Going strictly from memory here, I think Toho is listed in the production credits for some Studios Ghibli films. But whether Toho was one of the film partners or just a distributor, these movies are clearly the work on Studio Ghibli.
