Franchise VideoGame Disscussion: Mass Effect or Dragon Age?

Postby GodzillavsJason » Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:49 pm

Two of Bioware's most famous franchises. Which do you like more Mass Effect franchise or Dragon Age franchise.
As for me they both have great characters, great plot, great gameplay, great audio, and a great universe. This is a hard one to choose from but i'm saying that Mass Effect is a lot better to me. Theres just characters I like more in that series like Tali, Garrus, Wrex and many others. But don't get me wrong Dragon Age has great characters as well like Sandal, Flemeth, Dog, and many others.

So what do the rest of you all think?

I much prefer Mass Effect over Dragon Age. The gameplay is SOOOOO much better and the characters are just more memorable. I normally prefer fantasy to sci-fi, but Mass Effect just keeps makes everything so interesting it doesn't really matter. With that said, I did still enjoy Dragon Age and seeing BioWare's take on Dwarves, Elves, Dragons, etc.

Going to have to go with Mass Effect the story is just better in my opinion though Dragon Age Origins and DA2 had decent stories just wish they where a little more cohesive plus the DA games reminded me of Lord of the Rings.

I haven't played Mass Effect yet, but I have played the two Dragon Age games, so I'm going with them.

Don't worry, I plan too.

Eventually anyway. Have to beat Skyrim an X amount of times and beat Dragon Age 2 first.

I prefer sci-fi to fantasy in most scenarios, but the dragon age games are a fun series. I would say Mass Effect is more enjoyable though. Skyrim is better than both though :P

Mass Effect. I absolutely love the Mass Effect series, and I thought Dragon Age was extremely boring.

Agreed, I personally did not like neither series but if I had a choice then I would pick Mass Effect. I hated the combat system in Dragon Age and it really did not seem as great as most people made out to be.

Skyrim is overrated as hell. It's like the Call of Duty of RPGs right now.

So the game series with 5 installments in 17 years is the equivalent to the game series with 8 installments in 8 years? Elder Scrolls games were voted game of the year the last three installments. Skyrim received heaps of praise from players and critics, Call of Duty... not so much. Your comparison makes literally zero sense.

It was different, that is for sure. I think BioWare's success lead to Dragon Age series being over hyped though. The first was a great game. The second I wouldn't say was bad, but it did not live up to the quality and expectations people have with a BioWare game.

I'm not comparing them based on that. I'm comparing them by how both are extremely overrated. Everyone acts like Skyrim is the greatest creation known to man right now. Same for Call of Duty. I will admit, Skyrim is obviously a much better game than anything the Call of Duty franchise has come out with, but I'm still sick to death of hearing how it's a "perfect masterpiece".

Lets not forget about that annoying Meme from Skyrim "I took an arrow to the knee." I hate that meme so much.

Skyrim is overrated. I definitely agree there. But that doesn't take away from its MANY merits. It is an excellent game, and probably deserves the title of best RPG at the moment. It's ignorant to discredit something just because it happens to be a hot topic at the moment. Boo hoo. It's like people hating "mainstream music" simply for the fact that a lot of people like it.

Greatest game ever? No. It is a very, very good game though. Keep in mind to win game of the year Skyrim had to beat out the likes of Skyward Sword, Arkham City, Deus Ex, Uncharted 3, etc. There were tons of AAA titles that came out this year and a majority of publications picked Skyrim above them.

The game is popular so people will talk about it; that may make you annoyed, but that does not make the game "overrated as hell". Being overrated doesn't land you with the likes of Halo, Half-Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 2, Twilight Princess, Bioshock, etc for average rating by publications.

They're both awful, but I still somewhat enjoy the original Mass Effect. Dragon Age 2 has some of the worst writing I've ever seen in a video game.

The Mass Effect series is not "awful". Both games are fantastic. The second one was easily the best game of 2010.

Mass Effect 2 had an awful, pointless plot. The dialog was also really bad (granted DA2 was much, MUCH worst). There was ZERO advancement from the Mass Effect story. Mac Walters should not be writing the franchise, he's a complete hack.

Then there's the incredibly casualized, cover shooting gameplay that feels like Gears of War in space. It hardly even feels like an RPG, and in all honestly, giving how both shallow and simplified both the combat and "choices" are in this game, it would be a compliment to even call it a TPS with RPG mechanics.

Speaking of choices, lets also not forget the hilarious black and white alignment that amounts to either "Blow up an orphanage" or "Solve world hunger." The alignment system is incredibly shallow, especially compared to choice based games like Alpha Protocol.

It's a very pathetic game, I can't fathom why people are so forgiving (or oblivious) to all of the issues that will probably return in Mass Effect 3. Luckily I already uninstalled Mass Effect 2 and have no urge to play any more Bioware games after that, I just wish I would have realized how dead Bioware was before buying Mass Effect 2.
