What WAS that shimmering onject they found in the floating wreckage? Godzilla skin? Mothra scales? Egg shell?

Considering its color, radioactivity, and proximity to where Godzilla washed up, I'd say it was just a scale.

Yeah, I think it's a scale. Whoever did the commentary (I forget who) had a similar hypothesis.

A year later, that irradiated turtle skeleton grew up, got some meat on his bones, and became a contract player over at Daiei...and the rest is history.

Yeah, it's supposed to be a piece of skin. Never made sense to me though, considering it looks like someone chewed up a bunch of Skittles or something then mashed them together into a single solid chunk.

Toho definitely meant it to be a scale. I have an old English-language booklet Toho produced to promote their films from 1964, and the summary of Mothra vs. Godzilla in that one refers to the object as one of Godzilla's scales.

I always figured a thin outer layer of Mothra's egg got chipped off.

I imagine a tiny speck of such a large creature wouldn't look as familiar close up. We're used to seeing Godzilla so far away.

It didn't look like a scale, and it seems to wrong color for Godzilla. But if Toho says that's what it was.

I'd always guessed it was from the edge of one of his fins.

It would make more sense to me if it was Mothra's scale and a piece of the egg chipped off. The only reason I can come up with why Godzilla's scale would be such a weird color scheme is that it was starting to rot.

I always assumed it was a scale; that seemed like the logical conclusion to me.
It certainly had a strange coloration, though.

Yeah. You ever see rainbows in puddles with motor oil in them? Something like that.
