Xbox 360 Successor, PS4 to be Revealed at E3

Postby ゴジラ » Sat Jan 07, 2012 10:51 am

Story:

According to the latest report regarding the inevitable successors to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, not one but both are set to be revealed at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

This news comes from industry sources speaking with MCV. No details were shared regarding the specifics of what Sony or Microsoft will show, nor we do know the extent of what either has planned. While Nintendo will be further detailing the Wii U ahead of its release later this year, we don't know that either the third Xbox or PlayStation 4 will be coming out this year. As such, that means that both companies would still have ample time to continue unveiling aspects of their respective systems if they decide to only share a few tidbits at E3.

Reaffirming the report on Twitter, MCV's Ben Parfitt stated, "Obviously we can't reveal our sources. But you have my personal word on this - the source is exemplary, 100% concrete, ultra high level." Further elaborating on that, MCV's Michael French told IGN, "This is very credible. Even if we don't see the hardware itself, or know a price or date, key publishers and developers are expecting some nod towards what direction PS4 will take at E3 this year. Sony isn't stupid - it knows that if Microsoft is planning to also say something about its next console, it can't be left behind."

This isn't the first time we've heard of such announcements coming at this year's E3, particularly when it comes to the successor to the Xbox 360. The Red Ring of Death fiasco aside, which was certainly a black eye for the company, Microsoft has enjoyed a great deal of success with the 360 due to the early lead it established -- it was out in the United States in November 2005, a full year before the PlayStation 3 and Wii were released. You can bet the company would like to get out ahead of Sony once again and that Sony would prefer that didn't happen.

It was reported last year that a source within Crysis developer Crytek had indicated an E3 2012 reveal of the Xbox 720 (or whatever the actual name ends up being, as "720" seems highly unlikely) was in the works. Separately, we've heard that EA and others had early versions of the new Xbox hardware, but this was denied. Yet another rumor suggested the system would both be unveiled and released in 2013. Other sources suggest the next Xbox and PlayStation aren't likely to be out until 2014, or 2013 at the earliest, though that would not preclude their announcements from coming at E3.

The odds of a 2012 launch for the Xbox's successor, which has been mentioned somewhat often, are not great. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter is among those who don't buy into the 2012 launch talk, having deemed the rumors "silly." Indeed, it doesn't make a great deal of sense for Microsoft to undercut itself as, at least in the U.S., it has been consistently outselling the competition. During Black Friday week, the system enjoyed its biggest sales week ever with almost a million units sold in the U.S. alone.

Rumors regarding the PlayStation 4 have been somewhat less frequent, both because the PS3 is a year younger than the 360 and because of Sony's dedication to providing a long life cycle for its systems. There have been reports that first-party studios are already at work on games for the PS4, while others suggest the system could come out in 2012 and be equipped with Kinect-style motion controls. What we do know for sure is Sony -- at least publicly -- doesn't feel pressured to rush the PS4 to market because of Wii U, but it will be (and almost certainly already has been) soliciting game makers for their feedback as the system is designed.

This year's E3 is set to take place June 5-7 in Los Angeles.

I'm sure that some chunk of gamers here already had a feeling that something like this would happen. At least at some point of course. Although E3 is still light-months away, none the less, I am very interested in seeing how both sides will present their upcoming successors during the event.

Too bad Anonymous is going to extinctify Sony, thus rendering the PS4 pointless. As for the Xbox 720, I assume you're going to be able to play 360 games on it?

Well, looks like E3 might be more enjoyable this year than I had expected. And I have to agree, although Anonymous maybe a thorn to Sony, Sony isn't going to be brought down by them. Thinking a whole entire business empire to become extinct because of a few past events would be illogical.

I'm pretty sure people will come in and say it's too soon for another console when the PS3 came out late 2006 which was five years ago and the 360 will turn seven years old later this year. I had my 360 since May 2007 and I don't plan to get rid of it anytime soon.

And now, we shall spend hundreds of dollars to get these new game platforms, because they will stop making games for the 360, and we will have to spend hundreds of dollars just so that we can continue playing new games. The upside? Better graphics. That's it.

More money down the drain.

They will still make games for the PS3 and 360. They keep on making games for the original Xbox until early 2007 and 2008 is often view as the last great for the PS2 (nothing good came out afterwards other then sports games and kid games).

Also more processing power, allowing for more vibrant and animated level designs. Faster loading times, and more online stuff.

More money down the drain.

This is why I'm investing in a gaming PC. It's alot more cost-effective in the long run to upgrade a PC every 5 years rather than to spend a giant chunk of money when the next generation of consoles comes by,

Skyrim duh...

Anyway I highly doubt it. Michael Pacter, biggest video game analyst/most famous, says its highly unlikely. Think about it. The two consoles should be coming out lets say the end of 2014. So why reveal the consoles three E3s early? Now if they release the consoles at the end of 2013, it makes sense but both companies revealed interest in keeping up the current gen to the end of 2014.

If I were to guess, I would say Microsoft will reveal a new slimmer/upgraded X-box 360 and Sony will show off a new upgrade to the PS3. This will buy them time until next year when they tease their new consoles.

....So?

If you wanna play new video games then that's the price you gotta pay. And no one's forcing you to buy it, you can still play old games. Hell once I realized how much the Wii sucks I stopped buying games for it and just went back to playing GameCube games and playing X-Box 360 games when I hung at my friends because they own a 360.

The only thing they've ever done to Sony was the attack on their website. Some idiots looking for attention went all "LAWL Z0MG I NO HO DID DAT DATS ANONYMOOSE MUH BESTFRANDS I KNOW THEM" when the PSN went down and then the Fox took it and ran with it.

I'm not seeing these coming for a while. Since... 2008/09 I've been reading that Sony won't bother with a PS4 because they've lost too much on the PS3, but every person I speak with says they've read nothing about it and state the opposite... And they say that IGN is their source...

They should just keep updating the current systems. These systems are pretty much as good as they're gonna get unless someone makes a virtual reality system. A new system off of these would be pointless because there really isn't much to update. Plus all these games getting sequels shouldn't be updated exclusively for these new systems, they should either just stay on the 360 and PS3, or be released on both.
Long Story Short- XBox 720 and PS4 = Pointless. (If released in 1-2 years)
However eventually at some point we will all feel the need to update the systems, but it's too soon. They both just released Kinect and whatever PS had, so this would be a bad idea unless we can move all of our saved data to a new system. I think this is the best idea.

If Microsoft and Sony were smart they realize that this is the first time in video game history they can really push their current systems with upgrades such as kinnect and move upgrades save the 720 and PS4 for when you can compete with a PC.

^It's not like you need to buy the PS4 so soon. People will still be playing on the PS3, it was not until 2007 when the PS3 and 360 started to take over.

In all honesty, I don't think we need another generation of consoles for years. What gameplay changes could a new console bring? The WiiU was needed though.
